Guidelines
- We would like to have a prayer
before the evening’s match begin. This is just a simple reminder of
what the night’s activities are really all about.
- Matches begin at 6:30 on Thursday
evenings.
- Minimum player age is 16 as
of the first preseason practice match.
- Preseason and postseason matches
are practice matches and thus do not count toward the season standings.
- Tournament players must have
played in roughly ½ of the season’s matches.
- A representative from each
team must report their wins and losses to Scott Patrick after each match.
Call 583-4845 or send e-mail to ssp1jmp2@aol.com and use
the key letter designations to report the results. Please report each
game’s score as well as the overall match results (number of games
won and lost). Please be diligent about reporting scores.
- In the event of rain, opposing
captains should confirm cancellation and inform the host site team.
Please remember these games are for fun. We want to see all of you in
one piece at the tournament. Some churches have indoor facilities that
may be used when it is raining and their team is the home team. Matches
played indoors because of rain do not count. Teams scheduled to play
at these churches should expect to play rain or shine. Remember to bring
kneepads or other protective gear since you'll be playing on wooden
floors.
- We are collecting a $20 entrance
fee per team. Some of the money goes to St. John Lutheran Church as
a good will offering for letting us use their courts, and some goes
to renting a port-o-potty for the tournament. The fee may also be used
for other necessary supplies.
Rules of Play
- This is a co-ed league. A
team must have at least one member of the opposite sex play each game
during the regular season and in the tournament. It is understood that
sometimes that just isn’t possible. If a team has 6 or more regular
season matches that are played as a single-sex team, they forfeit one
game per match of single-sex team play. Each non-co-ed match played
during the tournament must be forfeited. When reporting the results,
a single-sex team must indicate so.
- Teams are made up of a maximum
of 9 players on the court. There is no minimum number required. A team
may rotate in as many players as they like.
- Each fault results in a point
for the opponent, regardless of which team served (a.k.a. rally point
scoring). A game is won by the team which first scores 25 points with
a minimum lead of two points, or continues until a two-point lead is
achieved. The team that wins two out of three games wins the match.
However, all three games count toward the season standings. More games
may be played, but only the first three count. The round-robin matches
(one game against each team) and the semi-final match in the tournament
will also be played to 25 points; the final match will be the best of
three 25-point games.
- The server must loudly and
clearly announce the score before each serve. This helps prevent the
opponent from being caught off-guard and keeps everybody informed of
the score.
- The ball may contact the net
during the serve (a.k.a. a “let” serve).
- Blocking the serve. There
has been much controversy and debate over this one. Here is the official
Hummelstown Area Mixed Fellowship Volleyball League ruling: Players
in the front row cannot attack (spike) or block an opponent's serve.
Front row players can return a serve directly back over the net provided
that the ball has 'broken the plane of the net’ (i.e., the bottom
of the ball has passed below the top of the net). Front row players
are also permitted (unconditionally) to pass or set an opponent's serve
to another player on their own team.
- Maximum of 3 hits per side.
A player may not double hit unless the first hit was a block against
the other side.
- No hitting the ball below
the waist. If a ball is hit below the waist (from the hip, leg or foot),
the ball is called dead and given to the other team.
- Do not carry the ball. Captains,
you should be aware of what a carry is and demonstrate it to your team.
- An opponent cannot block
a set or a bump, unless the ball is coming over the net at the time.
Do not cross the plane of the net to interfere with the other team’s
movement of the ball on their side.
- Do not touch the net. If
a player touches the net, the ball is called dead and given to the other
team.
- Although spiking is not prohibited,
keep in mind that inexperienced players may not be able to defend themselves
against a hard spike and get hurt or discouraged. If yours is clearly
the dominant team please back down and play less aggressively.
Good Luck!
Captains, it is your
responsibility to explain and demonstrate the rules to your teams. If
there is a dispute on a call, simply play the point over. If there is
still a dispute, captains should flip a coin and let the coin decide
who is right. We’ve been playing for more than 10 years and the rules
have been getting a little too laid back. We are just trying to remind
everyone what is right and fair in our league and we want everyone to
enjoy their summer play.
The purpose of this league
is to have fun. So, enjoy and we will see all of you this summer! Have
a great season one and all and GOOD LUCK!
