Q: What does ZL3 mean?
 
A: Every country is allocated a special series of call signs for all users of the radio spectrum. In New Zealand Amateur Radio operators have callsigns beginning with ZL1 through ZL4.
ZL3 callsigns are normally allocated to Amateurs in the Canterbury area and surrounding Districts.
 
Q: What is a Ham?
 
A: A Ham is short hand or friendly term for an Amateur Radio operator. It is in common use throughout the world.
 
An Amateur Radio Operator is someone that has passed exams in technical and operating knowledge set by the government of the country he/she resides in.
 
He/she is then entitled to operate in certain bands of frequencies (eg: 80M, 40M, 20M)
using a wide range of modes (eg: Morse, SSB, AM, data, FM, satellites)
and comminicate with other licensed hobbyists around the world.
