Previous puzzle:
There are one hundred gnomes in front of a barn and a man with a bag of black and white hats stands at the entrance. Gnomes enter one at a time and the man places either a white or a black hat on their head. The gnomes cannot see the color of their own had or gesture/speak/communicate with each other in any way. What strategy can the gnomes use to line up such that all gnomes wearing white hats are on one side of the barn and all those wearing black hats are on the other? (5 points) Best answer:
The first two gnomes will go and stand in the centre side by side.The third gnome will come in and see the color of their hats. If they have hats of same colour, he will stand to the right side of the right gnome. If they are wearing different hats, he will stand in between them. When the fourth gnome will come in, he will see the colour of the hats of the three earlier gnomes. If they are all of the same colour, he will stand on right side of the rightmost gnome, otherwise in between the two gnomes having different hats. This will continue for 99 gnomes.
The last gnome will stand in between the two gnomes in the centre, which are separating the two groups. In this way, all gnomes will be lined up in such a way that all gnomes wearing white hats are on one side of the barn and all those wearing black hats are on the other.
