Texas officials said on Monday that 534 women and children were removed from a polygamist ranch where a judge deemed that all the 401 teenagers, mostly girls, were in danger of sex abuse. The raid was sparked when a 16-year-old girl called the authorities revealing she was being abused and that other girls, as young as 14 and 15, were being forced into marriages with much older men.

A Dutch study, one of the largest of its kind to examine the combined effects of drinking and exercise, found there were additional protective effects gained from doing both. Non-drinkers had a 30-31% higher risk of heart disease compared to moderate drinkers, no matter the amount of physical activity they undertook, researchers said.

Nokia Corp. said Tuesday that it has agreed with worker representatives on a $314m plan to soften the blow from its closure of a factory in Germany. German unions and politicians heavily criticized Nokia when the company announced in January that it planned to close the plant in Bochum in the industrial Ruhr region at a cost of 2300 jobs.

Further examination showed drivers suffering from flu were 57 times slower than normal in responding to an image, while those who had a liter of beer were only 5-10 times slower.

China's foreign exchange reserve reached US$1.68 trillion at the end of March, up 39.94% from the same period last year, the People's Bank of China announced in Beijing Friday. Growth of the forex reserve has been slowing since the beginning of this year, according to calculation.

Russia will take military and other steps along its borders if Ukraine and Georgia join NATO, Russian news agencies quoted Russian General Baluyevsky as saying Friday. Russia is fiercely opposed to NATO plans to grant membership to the two nations, saying such a move would pose a direct threat to its security and endanger the fragile balance of forces in Europe.

The Beijing municipal government has launched a campaign to recruit 1000 homestay families for overseas tourists during the Beijing Olympics. Families that are able to provide a separate guest room can apply before the April 30 deadline, but only if all family members are in good health and at least one member can speak a foreign language. Overseas travelers can stay with the families at a cost of about RMB400 to RMB600 per day.

Mayor suspended after accident

A mayor in Hubei Province was asked to leave her post following an inquiry nearly a month after she killed a child when driving on a highway, local authorities said Saturday. While driving a Toyota Prado from Yichang to Dangyang on March 17, Dangyang City Mayor Fan Xiaolan hit and killed an 11-year-old student. Local media reported Fan paid RMB200000 in compensation to the family. Further investigation into the case is underway.
湖北官员4月12日透露，撞死小学生的湖北当阳市女市长范晓岚从即日起离岗接受组织调查。今年3月17日上午，范晓岚驾驶丰田霸道越野车，从宜昌行驶至当阳某小学门口时发生交通事故，将一名11岁小学生撞死。当地媒体报道，范晓岚给死亡学生家人赔偿金20万元。此案的详细调查还在进行中。

Coal mine blast kills 14

The accident took place at the No.3 Coal Mine of Shaguotun Village at 10:15 Saturday morning. Huludao city government has issued an circular asking 77 other coal mines in the city to suspend production for rectifying measures.

China to lift poverty line

The Chinese government is mulling to lift the benchmark poverty line from the current RMB1067 to RMB1300, according to a notice issued by the Poverty Alleviation Office under the State Council. The office is soliciting opinions from 26 of its subsidiaries nationwide. Once the new criteria is adopted, China's impoverished population would be doubled to 80 million.
