The Beijing Morning Post reported that new anti-smoking regulations passed by the municipal legislature will go into effect in May. The new regulations will ban smoking within stadiums and businesses including restaurants, Internet cafes, public offices, canteens, hallways and elevators. Hotels and rest houses will be required to offer smokeless guest rooms.

China's quality watchdog has ordered a ban on imports of Italian mozzarella cheese after Italy Friday recalled the product that was possibly tainted with cancer-causing dioxin. The watchdog confirmed Mozzarella cheese has been exported to China, and said importers must immediately stop selling it. Pizza Hut and KFC restaurants say the mozzarella cheese in their food is not made in Italy.

North Korea Saturday asked for an apology from South Korea for the "offensive" remarks by a South Korean military official, otherwise it will take such a resolute measure as totally banning the passage of persons in authority of South Korea including military personnel through the Military Demarcation Line as an immediate step, according to North Korea's state media KCNA. The official Wednesday called for "a preemptive attack on North Korea's nuclear base when necessary". South Korea's defence ministry will decide within two or three days on whether it should send a reply or not.

The US National Cancer Institute and researchers at the University of Hawaii found that women who ate the most soy-based foods, such as tofu, when aged 5 to 11, reduced their risk of developing breast cancer by 58%. UK scientists at Newcastle University have created part-human, part-animal hybrid embryos for the first time in the country. The embryos survived for up to three days and were created by injecting DNA derived from human skin cells into eggs taken from cow ovaries that had virtually all their genetic materials removed. The Pentagon released a now-defunct legal memo Tuesday that approved the use of harsh interrogation tactics against terror suspects. The Justice Department memo, dated March 14, 2003, legalized "unintended" tortures including acid scalding, severe mental pain and suffering, threat of imminent death and physical pain resulting in impaired body functions, organ failure or death.
