Beijing Olympic flame is on
The torch for the 2008 Olympic Games was lit successfully by the High Priestess at the Temple of Hera in ancient Olympia, Greece Monday. The torch will now be relayed in Greece for seven days before arriving in Beijing on Mar 31. Then it will be taken around the world before entering Sanya, Hainan for the domestic relay on May 4, set to arrive at the National Stadium on Aug 8. The flame will travel to 21 foreign cities in five continents and 31 domestic provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities over 130 days, covering a journey of 137000km and involving 21880 torchbearers.

China's per capita gross domestic production (GDP) reached $2456 in 2007, and the overall domestic consumption market has further expanded, said Yu Guangzhou, Vice Minister of Commerce. China now ranks among the world's fastest growing consumer markets, boasting the world's largest cell-phone market and second largest gold and auto market.

French surgeons carried out the world's first full-face transplant last year on a 30-year-old modern-day Elephant Man - Mr. Pascal Coler, whose face had been horribly disfigured by tumors since the age of six. The 16-hour operation that was kept secret until just recently involved replacing his face with that of a dead donor. The new face has now helped him find a job and possibly love in the future.(See photo)

Taiwan will get prepared at any time to open direct RMB exchange service within the island, said Peng Huainan, president of the island's "central bank" Monday. A media delegation left Beijing for Tibet Autonomous Region Wednesday morning following unrest in Lhasa. The Information Office of China's State Council has arranged a three-day trip for the delegation, which is composed of 26 journalists from 19 media organizations, such as ChinaDaily from Chinese maniland, AP from US, Financial Times from UK, South China Morning Post from Hong Kong and Central News Agency from Taiwan.

25 killed in fireworks blast
25 people were killed and 7 injured in an accidental explosion at a fireworks disposal site in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Wednesday. The accident happened at about 7:00 pm, when authorities in Turpan city were destroying fireworks in the Gobi desert. Five others are still missing with the cause of the accident currently under investigation.

A Californian aerospace company intends to enter the space tourism market with its two-seat Lynx spaceship, which will be carrying paying customers aloft in 2010. Lynx, the size of a small private aircraft, will take off from a normal runway. Trial 3G service on the way
China Mobile announced Friday it would begin trial services of the indigenous third-generation (3G) mobile phone service from Apr 1 in eight major cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. China Mobile would provide 20000 users with handsets worth RMB2000(US$282) to RMB4000 each and data cards free of charge for the trial use. A monthly subsidy of RMB800 would also be offered to each user.
