Jia Qinglin was reelected chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC at the fourth plenary meeting of the First Session of the 11th CPPCC National Committee Thursday afternoon. The meeting also elected 25 vice-chairpersons, a secretary-general and 298 Standing Committee members. The newly elected chairman and vice-chairpersons are 2.8 years younger in average than those of the 10th CPPCC National Committee.

12 buried in avalanche
12 construction workers, who were building the second line of the West-East natural gas transmission project, were buried in an avalanche in Guozigou, in northwestern Xinjiang Thursday morning. Four people have been confirmed dead. More than 200 people participated in the rescue, which was very difficult because of the narrow road, falling debris and cold weather.

No policy to boost market
China A-shares closed lower Thursday with Shanghai Composite Index tumbling below 4000. Fan Fuchun, member of the National Committee of CPPCC and vice-chairman of China Securities Regulatory Commission(CSRC), responded that people should have faith in China's stock market, but CSRC won't be the savior in the stock market. He said Premier Wen has set the target for China's macro-economy in his government work report. For example, the economy will increase 8% this year and the CPI rise will be restricted within 4.8%. Thus, China's macro-economy will develop in a healthy and steady way.

More fund for basic education
Zhou Ji, Minister of Education, said spending on education has increased during a group interview on "fair education" Friday. Of the total spending, 60% is on basic education, about 20% on vocational education and over 20% on higher education, which is similar to that in other countries. The minister also refuted the recent reports that pre-school education would be included into compulsory education.

Far from being heavy, lumbering and clumsy, pregnant women are often fascinating, beautiful and serene, according to Liv Lorent, the artistic director of a British ballet company. She is recruiting 12 pregnant women to star in a production alongside six professional ballet dancers. The only requirement is that anyone wishing to take part should be up to 32 weeks by the time of the performance on May 14. She has also hired an active birth therapist to advise on the movements and abilities of expectant mothers.

Florida bans droopy pants
The Florida Senate passed a bill Thursday aimed at outlawing what some teenagers consider a fashion statement - wearing pants half way down their buttocks, exposing flesh or underwear. It could mean suspensions for students with droopy britches. Several southern US towns and cities have passed similar "saggy pants" laws, with a maximum penalty of 60 days in jail for repeat offenders.(See photo)

Hu Jintao was reelected president of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and chairman of the PRC Central Military Commission at the fifth plenary meeting of the First Session of the 11th National People's Congress Saturday. The plenary meeting reelected Wu Bangguo chairman of the NPC Standing Committee and elected Xi Jinping vice-president of the PRC. The meeting also adopted the government reshuffle plan.

Yuan favored as dollar falls
The declining dollar has caused a great many foreign companies and individuals heading to China to drop the greenback and choose yuan instead. Snow closes 150 schools
More than 150 schools are closed Friday in the Canadian city Montreal, Quebec Province over fears that snow-covered roofs may collapse, and nearly 100000 students were affected. The city's school board said it does not take any chances with the safety of students due to the near-record snowfall this winter, including more than 50 centimeters over last weekend. Several roof collapses have occurred as a result of accumulated snow during the season, killing three women.

Atlanta braces for new storm

Rus. rocket fails US mission
A Russian rocket failed to send into orbit a United State's communication satellite that was launched from Central Asia's Baikonur space center early Saturday, news agencies reported. The AMC-14 satellite, atop of a Proton-M carrier rocket, was put into an orbit with the apogee altitude of 28000km instead of the planned 36000km, the Itar-Tass news agency said, citing Russian space agency Roskosmos. The failure was caused by the booster engine.

Wen Jiabao was approved Sunday morning by legislators to start another five-year term as Chinese premier, and Guo Boxiong and Xu Caihou were approved to be vice-chairmen of the Central Military Commission (CMC) of the People's Republic of China. Liang Guanglie, Chen Bingde, Li Jinai, Liao Xilong, Chang Wanquan, Jing Zhiyuan, Wu Shengli and Xu Qiliang were approved to be CMC members. US lost the title of "world's biggest" to the euro zone this week as euro surged to a record high of more than $1.56. Taking the GDP of both economies in 2007, the combined GDP of the 15 countries which use the euro overtook that of the US. Official figures show the 2007 GDP - $13.844 trillion for US and 8.848 trillion euros ($13.88 trillion) for the euro zone.

NPC approves vice-premiers
The 1st Session of the 11th NPC held its 7th plenary meeting on Monday afternoon, approving Li Keqiang, Hui Liangyu, Zhang Dejiang and Wang Qishan as vice-premiers of the State Council. The deputies also voted for five State councilors, ministers, heads of commissions, governor of the People's Bank of China, auditor-general of the National Audit Office, and secretary-general of the State Council. They also voted on the draft name list of chairmen, vice-chairpersons and members of eight special committees of the 11th NPC.

Asian stocks tumble
Asian stocks plunged Monday after JPMorgan said Sunday it would acquire troubled US investment bank Bear Stearns at $2 a share, and The Federal Reserve took bold action Sunday evening by cutting its discount rate to 3.25% from 3.5%, signaling to investors the depths of the credit crisis. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index sank 3.7% to close at 11787.51 points, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index closed down 5.18% at 21084.61 points.

Poultry bird flu confirmed
An outbreak of bird flu in poultry has been reported in Guangzhou, the Ministry of Agriculture said Sunday. The National Bird Flu Reference Laboratory confirmed the case, which occurred at a market in Liwan District of Guangzhou Thursday. It was caused by the highly pathogenic H5N1 subtype of the avian influenza virus, the MOA said. The disease, which killed 114 domestic fowl and led to the culling of another 518, has been brought under effective control.

The 19th-century yellow palazzina is glamorous and well-decorated, which Versace often used to entertain celebrities and stars at the weekend, including former Princess Diana and pop star Madonna.

The gold price shot up to a fresh record high of $1023.50 a troy ounce Monday at the London AM Fix after the dollar tumbled and Bear Stearns, America's fifth largest investment bank, was sold to JP Morgan at a knockdown price. The gold price surged across the board at the Shanghai Gold Exchange, up 6.2 yuan per gram at least, with the price of silver jumping 110 yuan/kg to close at 5018 yuan/kg.

China awaits Olympic Torch

A medieval cathedral in Spain's port of Valencia has installed two indoor traffic lights to help control the influx of visitors during the Holy Week before Easter, which began Sunday. Space robot flexes muscles
Astronauts are getting a helping hand in the International Space Station from a Mr. Dextre, a Canadian-built $200m-plus robot. Astronauts from the US shuttle Endeavour assembled his 3.3-meter-circa arms during their second spacewalk Saturday. When finished, Dextre, 3.6 meters high and weighing 1500kg, will perform maintenance tasks, relieving astronauts of risky duties. He will start work in 2009 with a 15-year service time.(See photo)

Researchers found that of 10000 UK adults followed for 17 years, those who sleep more than eight hours were at an elevated risk of dying from non-cardiovascular causes.

Super ship, city at sea
A US company plans to build a gigantic vessel, Freedom Ship, which would be 4 times longer than the Queen Mary, now the world's largest cruise ship, or 13 times longer than the Titanic. With a design length of 4500 feet (1400m), a width of 750 feet (230m), and a height of 350 feet (110m), Freedom Ship will be a floating city that will contain over 60000 residents. The proposed vessel would be a mobile metropolis which would house schools, a hospital and an airport. The vessel is estimated to cost $11b and expected to be finished within 3 years.(See photo)

The move, the second in 2008, which will take effect on Mar 25, will push the ratio to a new high of 15.5%.

1st private-car tour to DPRK
S. Korea's Hyundai Asan Company began a private-car tour on Monday to Mt. Kumgang resort on the east coast of N. Korea in which 15 passenger cars were allowed to cross the Demilitarized Zone for a 3-day tour that cost 340000 won, about RMB2346, each. This is the first time in 50 plus years that S. Korean tourists have been able to cross the border in their own cars. Once visitors arrive at their hotel, however, they have to leave their cars and use buses operated by the North because of the lack of roads and parking areas. The tour is also open to foreigners, said the company.

New York Governor David Paterson, who took over the state's top job Monday after Eliot Spitzer resigned amid a prostitution scandal, has admitted he had affairs during a rough patch in their marriage several years ago, a newspaper reported. He told Daily News he maintained a relationship with another woman from 1999 until 2001. He and his wife eventually sought counseling and repaired their relationship.

Israeli scientists in the University of Haifa claim that ganodermalucidum, a wild mushroom that used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, could treat prostate cancer. Researchers said they found the mushroom could impede the development of cancer by affecting the immune system. The in-vitro trials they have done show that it attacks the cancer cells directly.
