US three major stock indexes - the Dow Jones industrial average, the S&P 500 Index and the Nasdaq Composite Index fell Friday to close at their lowest level in 19 months after the government surprised investors with a report that 63000 jobs were cut on Feb, the steepest rate in nearly 5 years, standing as confirmation for many that the US is in recession.

China's central bank revealed Friday on its official website that nearly 600 million people's credit reports had been filed in its database by 2007. The credit history includes an individual's or a company's credit accounts, insurance record, housing fund information and telephone bills, etc. Bad credit records may result in refusal of bank loan applications.

Food safety law in pipeline
Top legislator Wu Bangguo promised Saturday to give the general public more say in the food safety legislation and other laws concerning the public. The food safety law, with 19 others, tops the legislation agenda of NPC this year, Wu said in his report to the 11th National People's Congress. Control of water pollution and protection of farmer-turned-workers' legal rights and interests will be the focus of supervision, Wu added.

Pentagon bans Google Maps
Citing security risks, the Pentagon banned Google teams from making detailed street-level video maps of US military bases after images of a Texas base ended up on the popular Internet site. Gary Ross, spokesman of the US Northern Command, said Thursday the 360-degree Street View provides clear imagery of control points, barriers, headquarters and security facilities that "pose a security risk" to the military bases. Google has removed the sensitive images as requested.

Euro cargo rocket takes off
The European Space Agency Sunday launched its first Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) into space. Weighing nearly 20-ton, the ATV is scheduled to dock with the International Space Station (ISS) on April 3 to deliver around eight tons of food, water, fuel and personal items to the crew. Dubbed "Jules Verne" in honor of the visionary French science fiction writer, this ATV is the first Europe has committed to the ISS program.

China's Labor and Social Security Minister Tian Chengping said Sunday that the employment situation is "very severe" this year, even though the country provided 51m jobs in urban areas in the last five years. He said on the sidelines of the First Session of the 11th NPC that about 20m new laborers emerge in urban and rural areas every year, with China having a large contingent of new labor for quite a long time. Drugs in US drinking water
A vast array of pharmaceuticals - including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones - have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans in 24 metropolitan areas, an Associated Press investigation shows Sunday. In Philadelphia, testing even discovered 56 pharmaceuticals or byproducts in treated drinking water.

Anti-graft war intensified
The work reports of the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate sent the same signal: China's fight against corruption is intensifying. Chinese stocks fell to a seven-month low Monday as the recent weak regional markets dampened investors who sold on worries over a possible interest rate hike to counter inflation. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index tumbled 3.6% to 4146.30, its lowest close since July 20, when it ended at 4058.85. China's CPI for February is forecast to rise to 7.8% from a year earlier, the fastest increase in 11-and-a-half years, strengthening expectations of a possible interest rate hike, analysts said.

South Korea named a woman engineer to be its first astronaut, after Russia accused the previous nominee of breaking training rules. Yi So-yeon, 30, a female bioengineering doctor, will blast off on board Russia's Soyuz rocket on April 8 on a trip to the International Space Station that will be watched on television by millions of South Koreans. Feb CPI hits 11-year high
China's consumer price index (CPI), the main inflation indicator, rose 8.7% in Feb over the same time last year, the highest monthly increase in nearly 12 years, the National Bureau of Statistics said Tuesday. The figure was mainly pushed up by soaring food prices and the severe winter weather that wrought havoc in south China from Jan to Feb. Analysts say the accelerating price hikes will pressure China's central bank to increase benchmark interest rates in the short run.

The bonus for winning a gold medal at the Beijing Olympic Games will exceed RMB150000 given by the Sydney Olympic Games, the General Administration of Sport has revealed recently. Calculated by adding RMB50000 from the previous Games, the bonus for each gold-medal winner at this year's Beijing Olympic Games will fetch RMB250000. With the bonus from the winner's home province, a kilogram of gold and $80000 from the Henry Fok Foundation, and the income from advertising campaign, a gold medal is valued at a minimum of RMB1.5 million.

Harvest fuel from air?
US researchers have proposed a concept to convert CO2 into fuel to power vehicles, forming a closed cycle - equal amounts of CO2 emitted and removed - that wouldn't worsen global warming. Air would be blown over a liquid solution of potassium carbonate, which would absorb the CO2. The CO2 would then be extracted and subjected to chemical reactions that would turn it into methanol, gasoline or jet fuel.

President Hu Jintao will pay a state visit to Japan in the near term, the first visit by a Chinese president to the neighbor in the new century, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Wednesday at a press conference held on the sideline of the NPC annual session. Wall Street rises on Fed plan
Wall Street finally found a reason for a huge rally Tuesday after the Federal Reserve said it plans to pump $200 billion into the financial markets to help ease the strain from the credit crisis. The European Central Bank, the Bank of Canada and the Swiss National Bank also agreed to loan investment banks money to increase the liquidity of the financial market. The Dow Jones industrial average shot up nearly 416 points, its biggest one-day point gain since July 2002.

At least one in four teenage American girls, about 3.2 million, has a sexually transmitted disease (STD), suggests a first-of-its-kind federal study that startled some adolescent-health experts. About half of the girls in the study acknowledged having sex, among whom 40% had an STD. The most common infection was human papillomavirus which can cause cervical cancer.

When Manuel Uribe from Mexico, 42, went out on a date on Mar 9, he arranged a forklift to carry him out of the house and a flatbed tow truck to haul the formerly half-ton man and his bed, but was stuck halfway when one of the posts over his bed hit an overpass.
