Overseas volunteers in BJ
奥运海外志愿者抵京
The first group of 14 overseas volunteers from the University of Iowa, US, serving the Olympic media department, arrived in Beijing Sunday night. They have been trained to write news stories by watching videos of different sporting events prior to a one-week Chinese culture training session at Tsinghua University starting today. In total, 292 volunteers from colleges in the US, UK and Australia will be in place from July 9.
14名北京奥运会首批海外志愿者于22日晚抵京，他们来自美国爱荷华大学，此前已接受过看比赛录像写新闻稿的培训，将在奥运期间担当媒体运行志愿者。从今起他们将在清华大学接受为期一周的中国文化培训。从7月9日开始，来自美、英、澳10所高校的292名海外志愿者将陆续抵达。
Hot majors but not many jobs
调查：热门专业难就业
People assume computer science and technology, law and English, the 3 hot majors, will guarantee jobs after graduation. However, according to China Youth Daily, of the top 10 majors resulting in unemployment, 9 are conventionally believed as hot majors including the above-mentioned ones. A leading reason is that more colleges are offering courses in these hot majors creating more competition for graduates to find jobs.
据《中国青年报》报道，07年毕业生求职调查显示，计算机科学与技术、法学、英语3个专业的学生在毕业半年后的失业人数居高不下。在10个失业人数最多的专业中，热门专业占了9个。在过去几年，英语、法律、计算机成为全国院校开设最多和招生最多的专业，同时也增加了这些专业就业的难度。
California bakes in heat
加州连日高温导致山火
Firefighters are still working to contain some 400 wildfires burning across Northern California on Sunday. Most of the fires scattered in the state were started by dry lightning strikes during thunderstorms. California has been suffering from a 4-day severe heat wave that has driven temperatures above 38℃.

China's crop output is forecast to exceed 120m tons this summer, 2.5m tons more than a year ago, Agriculture Minister Sun Zhengcai said on Sunday. This marks the 5th consecutive summer of bumper harvests for the first time since 1949. In spite of soaring world food prices, the harvest comes as the government encouraged farmers with a series of incentives, including subsidies.

Tiny isle goes independent

Stuart Hill, 65, the owner of the tiny island of Forvik off Scotland, Saturday declared its independence from the UK, saying he has no longer recognized the authority of the UK government or the European Union. Hill, who lives in a tent on the storm-battered island, says on his website that he plans to create Forvik's own currency and raise his own flag.(See photo)

China UnionPay's ATM business has expanded to 45 countries and regions, company president Xu Luode said Monday. Holders of the company's bank cards can now withdraw cash from 368000 ATMs in the 45 service areas and make direct purchases through nearly 200000 point-of-sale machines at about 150000 business outlets in 27 service areas.

A total of 300 flight attendants who are expected to serve on flights during the upcoming Olympic Games will start work in July, Air China officials said recently. These air stewards, most of whom have received a bachelor's degree, are noted for their well-rounded qualities and sound foreign languages skills. Half of them will be based in Beijing, while the rest will go to other Air China bases or subsidiaries. The best among them will serve on the Olympic-chartered flights.

China plans to turn the Tangjiashan "quake lake" into a scenic spot, Chen Xingchun, secretary general of the Communist Party Committee of Mianyang, Sichuan, said Monday. Experts are studying how to develop the lake in a "comprehensive" and "scientific" way. Chen said this would be an important part of rebuilding Beichuan County.

Japan ship reaches Zhanjiang

The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force ship, Sazanami, arrived in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province Tuesday afternoon to begin a 5-day visit to China. Aside from a 240-member crew, the Sazanami also carried disaster relief materials for earthquake victims in Sichuan, including 300 blankets and 2600 emergency food cans. Chinese sailors and residents will be allowed to visit the ship during its stay.

The National Copywright Administration (NCA) announced recently it had presented rewards totalling nearly RMB3.3m to 120 organizations and 94 individuals for their outstanding contributions in the crackdown on infringement and piracy. Among those rewarded were the Chongqing Municipal Copywright Administration and Hu Haitao with Beijing Municipal Copywright Administration.

Three Japanese companies jointly announced Sunday they would accept applications for a "space wedding" from July 1. This service offers an hour-long wedding in outer space about 100 km above the earth's surface. CCTV's Weather program will welcome 2 new hosts in the coming days, the Beijing Times reported Tuesday. The new anchorwoman, Wang Lanyi (cover photo, L), will appear in the program today, and anchorman Feng Shu (cover photo, R) will soon join her. '风神'至致粤港澳停课休市
Schools and ports in Shenzhen were closed Wednesday as tropical storm Fengshen, packing strong winds and heavy rains, hit the city after forcing schools and markets in Macao and Hong Kong to suspend or close in the morning. Fengshen landed in Shenzhen, Guangdong at 5:30 am and was forecast to hover in the province and neighboring Fujian for a while before heading to Jiangxi.

Taiwan authorities announced Thursday that local banks will be allowed to exchange Taiwanese and the mainland currencies from June 30 to meet the needs of travelers. Customers will be able to exchange the equivalent of RMB20000 at one time. Taiwanese brokerages will also be allowed to invest up to 20% of their net worth in the mainland, doubling the previous ceiling of 10%.

Crude oil futures shot above $140 a barrel Thursday in the New York Mercantile Exchange after OPEC said crude prices could rise above $150 this year and Libya said it may cut oil production. The record-high oil price pulled down global stocks prices, with the Dow Jones industrials Thursday dropping to its lowerst point in nearly 2 years. China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index Friday also closed at a 16-month lowest point.

On Friday, the central parity rate of the yuan, was set at 6.8610 yuan against the dollar, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trading System. The yuan has risen nearly 6.5 percent against the greenback so far this year, and has broken its own record high value 49 times.
中国外汇交易中心的最新数据显示，27日人民币对美元汇率中间价报6.8610，创下年内第49个新高。至此，2008年以来人民币对美元汇率累计升值幅度已经接近6.5%。
US court affirms gun rights

The US Supreme Court Thursday ruled in favor of individual rights to have guns for self-defense in a historic decision, overturning the 32-year-old gun banning policy in Washington D.C. The decision came out by the court's 5-4 ruling. It is estimated 30000 people were killed by gunshots every year in the country.

High-speed rail costs more
高速京津城铁票价不菲
The Beijing-Tianjin high-speed rail, set to start service on August 1, will cost RMB60-80 one way, much more than the current RMB43. Related departments are planning to issue monthly and yearly tickets. The journey takes about 26 mins with the highest speed at 394 km. The train runs from the Beijing south railway station at intervals of 5 mins in the morning and evening peak hours.(See photo)

The China National Petroleum Corporation said it would process 880000 tons, or about 3% more crude oil in the third quarter than the same period of last year. This came the same day oil prices climbed to a record above US$142 a barrel Friday.
