The RMB kept climbing Wednesday, with a new high against the greenback at RMB6.8823 to $1. It was the 45th time the yuan set a new high against the greenback this year and has risen more than 6.13% so far this year. China reformed its currency policy in July 2005, setting the RMB against a basket of currencies.
中国外汇交易中心最新数据显示，18日人民币对美元汇率继续走高，中间价破6.89，以6.8823再度创下2005年7月汇改以来新高。今年以来，这是人民币对美元汇率创出的第45个新高，累计升幅达6.13%。

90% investors lose money
调查显示九成股民亏损
A survey on 764588 stock investors shows 92.15% of the investors lost money between January 1, 2007 and June 16, 2008, and 82.66% of them attributed their losses to A-share market control and supervision problems. 4.34% of the investors made money, while 3.15% managed to break even. The survey was jointly conducted by CCTV's Half-hour Economy and 4 major domestic news portals.
央视《经济半小时》栏目联合4家门户网站对764588名股市投资者进行的调查显示，从2007年1月1日起至今年6月16日，投资者中亏损者的比例达92.51%，盈利者仅占4.34%，另有3.15%的人勉强保本。82.66%的投资者认为，A股市场调控及监管问题导致他们亏损。

Companies short of promise

A total of 11 foreign-funded enterprises, multinationals and HK, Macao and Taiwan-based companies, including Wal-Mart (China), had failed, partly or completely, to deliver the amount of money they promised to the quake-hit areas by June 13, according to the donation list released by the Ministry of Commerce. These companies had promised to contribute RMB195.45m in total, but only RMB15.535m had been received by June 13.

The whereabouts of 102 giant pandas in the world's largest reserve in terms of area in Baishuijiang National Nature Reserve in Gansu is unknown after the devastating quake. No deaths have been reported up to now. Founded in 1978, occupying an area of 3.34m mu, the reserve is home to 10 rare animal species including the giant panda and golden monkey.
受汶川大地震影响，世界面积最大的大熊猫保护区—甘肃白水江国家级自然保护区内102只大熊猫目前生存情况不明，但迄今未接到大熊猫伤亡报告。保护区成立于1978年，总面积334.5万亩，有大熊猫、金丝猴等10种珍稀动物。

The head of the Nine Dragons Paper Limited Zhang Yin has hit headlines again for being accused of running a "sweatshop". Zhang responded to the report released by Hongkong-based organizations saying it was groundless. Later, a source with the paper giant admitted that 415 employees were sacked with each obtaining a sum of compensation and claimed the practice was in accordance with the law.

Russian air force planes dropped a 25kg sack of cement on a suburban Moscow home last week while seeding clouds to prevent rain from spoiling a holiday, the Russia Day on June 12. Police told Russian media the package of cement failed to pulverize completely at a high altitude and fell on the roof of a house, making a hole with an 80-100cm diameter.

The 8th batch of 22 female pilots have been enlisted into a fighter-jet flying academy for advanced flight training after completing their initial flight training Wednesday. 19 provinces in eastern and central China will provide coordinated assistance in post-earthquake rebuilding in 18 quake-stricken counties and cities in Sichuan and the worst-hit regions in Gansu and Shaanxi, according to a post-quake reconstruction plan released Wednesday. At least 7 people were killed and another 21 injured Saturday when an arch on a steel railway bridge under construction collapsed in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, according to sources with the Wenzhou city government. The accident occurred at about 9:00 am, causing 3 nearby houses to fall down.

Typhoon Fengshen, which brought flashfloods and landslides to the Philippines, is expected to hit eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian by Tuesday. The typhoon is likely to turn northeast near the Taiwan Straits.
