Toxic gas leak kills 6
化肥厂毒气泄漏致6死
As of 3 am Friday, 6 people were dead and 28 ill from a poisonous hydrogen sulphide gas leak at a fertilizer plant in Kunming, Yunnan, according to the Kunming Municipal News Office. An assessment by the environment watchdog suggested the danger had been contained and further threat was unlikely. The leakage occurred at around 8 pm Thursday with the cause of the accident under investigation.
据昆明市政府新闻办发布，12日晚8时，云南省昆明市一家化肥厂发生硫化氢气体泄漏安全生产事故。截至13日3时已致6人死亡，28人接受医院救治和留院观察。环保部门评估显示，此次泄露已经得到控制，不会对周围环境造成进一步影响。事故原因调查等工作正在有序开展。

Shares fall to 15-month low

Chinese shares continued falling to a 15-month low on Friday with investors nervous about inflation and tightening fiscal policies. The Shanghai Composite Index shed 3% to 2868.80 points, declining for the 8th consecutive trading day. The Shenzhen Component Index lost 3.9% to 9936.73 points.

Straits talks open doors
大陆人赴台游协议签署
The first cross-Straits talks in 9 years resulted in a landmark agreement on Friday to allow mainland tourist groups to travel in Taiwan from July 18. It also prescribes a maximum stay of 10 days for each group. The mainland and Taiwan also agreed to start weekend chartered flights across the Straits from July 4, including 36 flights for every weekend from each Friday to the following Monday. Negotiations on chartered freight flights will be held within 3 months after the weekend services start.
大陆海协会与台湾海基会13日就大陆居民赴台游、周末包机分别签署协议。双方同意，自7月18日起正式实施大陆居民赴台组团游，自入境次日起在台停留期间不超过10天；两岸周末包机也将于7月4日正式实施，时段为每周五至下周一计四个全天，初期每周各飞18个往返班次。双方将在周末客运包机实施3个月内协商货运包机。

Yahoo, Google reach ad deal

On late Thursday, Yahoo ended months of negotiations with Microsoft after failing to agree on a deal, and Microsoft announced it had no interest in acquiring Yahoo any longer. Yahoo said it had agreed to let Google put search ads on its site in what it called an $800m annual revenue opportunity.

All the ministers from the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M) have quit the country's interim government in an effort to force the current PM out and allow them to form a new administration. The CPN-M won the most seats in April's election to replace the interim administration, but the current PM, Girija Prasad Koirala of the rival Nepali Congress party, had since refused to step down and make way for a new government.

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 jolted northern Japan Saturday, killing 3 people, injuring scores, and sending landslides sweeping across roads. The quake, at 8:43 am, was centered in Iwate, a mountainous rural area around 300km north of Tokyo, where the tremor was also felt, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Taliban militants staged a brazen bomb and rocket attack on the main prison in Kandahar, a city in southern Afghanistan, late Friday, blowing up the gate and helping nearly 1150 suspected insurgents flee. 350 among them are said to be Taliban fighters. Many police officers were reported killed.

As of Friday, 3 of the largest US carriers charge $15 for a first checked bag. The Beijing Sinopec spokesman said the 24 gas stations are appointed by the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games and are not only for Olympic vehicles. But during busy times, these vehicles have the priority of refueling.

Australia has developed a human vaccine for bird flu, Health Minister Nicola Roxon announced Tuesday. The vaccine will protect humans against the H5N1 strain of influenza responsible for outbreaks of bird flu in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa. The safety of the vaccine has been assessed for adults aged 18-64.

On Monday in Missouri and Washington DC, company representatives from the US and China signed 71 contracts and agreements totaling $13.6b. Some of the products included airplane engines and mechanical equipment. US carmakers General Motors and Ford both won export agreements worth $1b and $800m respectively.

India is planning to build 43 new information technology cities across the country over the next 10 years to retain its top status in the industry and to tap the huge surge in demand for IT-enabled services, Times of India reported Monday. The bilingual menu that will assist diners during the Olympics is now available in all hotels with a 3-star rating or above. It covers over 2000 varieties of dishes, staple food, snacks, desserts and wines. For typical Chinese food such as Jiaozi, Baozi and Mantou, pinyin is used instead of English translation.

110000 forced to flee Aba

About 110000 residents have been told to move from Aba Prefecture, Sichuan to avoid secondary disasters after the May 12 quake. Recently the risks of inundation and landslide have risen with the onset of the main flood season. Relocation of all residents is expected to be complete by Wednesday, said Wu Zegang, deputy Party secretary of Aba.

A story named "Road to China: Mind your manners" posted on US-based NBC's WKYC website on June 13 said US athletes are not only busy with sports training but also Chinese etiquette learning as well in preparation for the Olympics. Such lessons include "no green hats; nothing in fours; don't eat all your food". However, some Chinese netizens commented the listed "taboo" is not that serious or accurate as the story advised.
