Today is the Dragon Boat Festival and traditional races are being held across the country. A series of celebrations have been held from June 6 in the hometown of the patriotic poet Qu Yuan in Zigui County, Hubei, including a memorial ceremony for Qu Yuan, Dragon Boat races and poem contests. Unfortunately for torrential rain-hit Hunan, the races have been canceled due to safety concerns.

Sinopec has raised the prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), petroleum coke and heavy oil, by more than RMB100 per ton from June 1. The oil giant explained that the price adjustment was due to the high international oil price. Analysts say the company aimed to offset its losses by price hikes of those downstream products as the price of its prime products such as refined oil and natural gas remain under government control.
中石化6月1日起统一上调液化石油气、石油焦、重油等产品售价，上涨幅度在每吨100元以上。中石化表示，这次调价的原因是国际油价持续处于高位。市场分析认为，在成品油、天然气等国家管控产品价格无法上涨情况下，中石化只好通过对下游产品提价来应对亏损。

100 students from quake-hit Sichuan will pay a 3-week visit to Russia's Kemerovo region for rehabilitation, the regional press service said Saturday. The students are expected to arrive at a summer camp for youths on July 17 at the invitation of the regional governor. Medical experts and psychologists will be assigned to ensure the best treatment, and the camp will provide interpreters and Chinese meals.

Reports say citizens who want to simplify their "Olympic marriage" registration can make their appointment to Civil Affairs departments or via the Internet later this month, rather than wait, based on current policy, till July.

Cuban Health Minister Jose Ramon Balaguer has signed a resolution approving sex-change surgery, an official said Friday. The sex-change operations would be available to Cubans for free as part of their country's health-care system. The move is the latest in a series of changes implemented by Cuban government since President Raul Castro was elected in February.

It is said that if you can balance a raw egg on its end at exactly noon on the day, the rest of the year will be lucky.

Glutinous rice dumplings (zongzi) are a traditional Chinese food for the Dragon Boat Festival. While choosing zongzi, buyers need to pay attention to the color of the leaf wrapping which should be dark-yellow. Eating those with green and bright leaves may harm your health, because the processed leaves can contain excess amounts of copper.(See photo)

160000 zongzi from Jiaxing, Hangzhou and Shanghai have been sent to people in the quake-hit areas in Sichuan to help them enjoy the Dragon Boat Festival, local media reported. Volunteers from Chongqing also came to Dujiangyan, distributing zongzi, eggs and other gifts to quake survivors.

Southern China was hit by torrential rains, strong gales and thunderstorms over the weekend. Roads in Yichang, Hubei were blocked and many parts of the city suffered a blackout. Over 90 areas in Shenzhen, Guangdong reported heavy rains and 6 regions suffered landslides. A 10kw high voltage wire was hit in Shanghai, causing a blackout in some places. Many roads were paralyzed in Hong Kong and several hundred flights were delayed.

Hong Kong health authorities closed down a poultry market Saturday after excrement samples collected from hencoops confirmed the H5N1 avian influenza virus. So far there has been no report of human infections in Hong Kong but authorities have decided to raise the response level from "vigilance" to "serious".

Police in westernmost Canada are deploying life-size cardboard replicas of traffic cops pointing a radar gun at oncoming traffic to try to reduce speeding and road fatalities, authorities said Thursday. Zongzi, the food of the Dragon Boat Festival, is made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. The shape of zongzi range from relatively tetrahedral, to triangle and cylindrical. The fillings used vary from region to region, but the rice used is always sticky. Fillings may be sweet with skinless mung beans, red bean paste and dates, or savory with Chinese sausage, barbecue pork, mushrooms, chestnuts, seafood, eggs and so on. Each flavor tastes delicious.

Beijing's metro will only sell electronic tickets starting from Monday, marking the end to an era of paper tickets. A total of 3300 staff and volunteers will be in place to provide help for subway passengers. The water level of the Tangjiashan quake lake continued to rise - though at a slower speed than a day ago - despite the smooth operation of a man－made drainage channel, CCTV reported Sunday. Water Resources Minister Chen Lei warned that increasing rainfall, aftershocks and landslides were still threatening the barrier.

A US study concluded that drinking raises the risk of breast cancer, especially for older women. Heavy rains are forecast in many parts of south China over the next 9 days, packing strong gales and thunderstorms, the National Meteorological Center warned Sunday. The heaviest rainstorms in 50 years drenched parts of Guangdong over the weekend, killing at least one student and causing widespread flooding. Rare torrential rain had also wreaked havoc in Hong Kong Saturday, leaving 2 dead and 16 injured.

A 4.8-magnitude aftershock rocked the dam of the Tangjiashan "quake lake" for about 20 seconds Sunday and caused massive landslides on surrounding mountains at 6:51 pm. Another aftershock was felt on the dam at around 11:04 am Monday. Soldiers were forced to blast away rocks holding back water in the Tangjiashan lake.

3 villagers were confirmed dead and another 5 remained missing after they fell into a river in Jiangxi while watching a traditional dragon boat race Sunday. The 8 were in a crowd on the bank of a river in Tonggubao village of Wuni town in the county of Yugan when they slipped at around 5 pm. Witnesses said the riverbank had become muddy and slippery after rain.

A new communications satellite, Zhongxing-9, lifted into space aboard the Long March-3B rocket carrier from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center at 8:15 pm Monday. The satellite will be used for live television broadcasts, providing 47 digital channels for people in remote regions of China. The satellite will enable audiences to watch live broadcasts of Olympic events.

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti (with F1 transmission) will be recalled starting Tuesday due to defects on the clutch sensor by the company's Shanghai outlet. The affected cars were produced between March 31, 2004 and October 8, 2007. A total of 27 such cars are running in China.

US scientists have discovered the first icequakes on Antarctica between 2001 and 2003 after examining seismic activities around the continent. They said the movement of a huge stream of ice, about 100km wide and 800m thick, creates seismic waves and can be felt through the entire Antarctic. These icequakes had the force of a magnitude-7.0 earthquake.

The debris of the crashed Mi-171 helicopter was found in a forest in Yingxiu Township at 10:55 am Tuesday. A crew of 5 military personnel and 14 quake victims were all found dead. The military helicopter crashed on May 31 while transferring injured local residents from the epicenter. It was reported to have encountered strong turbulence and fog.

The Shanghai Composite Index dived 7.73% to end at 3072.33 points, and the Shenzhen Component Index fell 8.25% to 10765.91 points. The poisonous chemical, crude phenol, spilled into the Zhesang River from a truck which overturned near a dam Saturday in Funing, Yunnan. The chemical spilled into the river which is 15km from a water intake for 200000 people in Baise, Guangxi, Monday. Measures like building a barricade and throwing lime into the river to neutralize the chemical are being taken, local officials said. The water near the dam where people access water has not been contaminated yet.

The US Department of Energy announced Monday that its new supercomputer "Roadrunner" had successfully performed 1000 trillion calculations per second - the fastest in the world. The $100m machine, developed by engineers from the Los Alamos National Laboratory and IBM Corp, in one day can do the job of the world's 6b people working on calculators for 24 hours a day for 46 years.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin wants to go to space and has made a $5m down payment to book a seat on a future orbital space flight with Space Adventures, the space tourism company revealed Wednesday. The company said it was recruiting a group of people who will each contribute $5m to pay for the company to launch its 1st private mission to the International Space Station.

The State Administration of Taxation is investigating home appliance retailers Gome, Suning and Dazhong over their reporting of value-added tax (VAT) collections, the National Business Daily reported. The probe is to "find out if these home appliance retailers concealed sales revenue following irregularities in their reporting of VAT collections."
