"I believe that we can certainly overtake in 10 to 20 years with the great support of the government," Wu Guanghui, a new member of the National Committee of the CPPCC and aviation expert, expressed his confidence of China's large aircraft projects. Large aircraft are those with a take-off weight of more than 100 tons, or trunk-liners with more than 150 seats. Currently only US, Russia and another four European countries can make large aircraft, with the market dominated by US's Boeing and Europe's Airbus.

Microsoft is to attempt a boardroom coup at Yahoo! within a week in an effort to force the online search engine to start serious talks or accept its $41b bid. According to the rules that govern the way in which Yahoo! is set up, any shareholder can nominate directors before the annual meeting. The deadline for such nominations is March 14.

China's PC giant Lenovo is poised to join the Fortune Global 500 club this year, based on the performance of the listed enterprises in 2007, Lenovo chairman Yang Yuanqing said Sunday. The company, after buying IBM's PC business 3 years ago, has boosted its scale, profit, brand and management via the cross-border alliance. Now, it takes 8% of the global PC market, second only to HP and Dell.

A Spanish breeder of fighting bulls has decided to clone his favorite stud. The cloning will cost 30000-35000 euros and will guarantee a perfect genetic copy. To perform the cloning, stem cells will be extracted from the stud's ear lobe and sent to a laboratory run by Texas-based genetics firm, who will then return the embryo.

2008 defense budget up 17.6%
China plans to increase its defense budget for 2008 by 17.6%, or RMB62.379 billion, to reach RMB417.769 billion, Jiang Enzhu, spokesman for the annual session of the National People's Congress, told a press conference in Beijing Tuesday. He explained that the defense budget is raised to further increase benefits for military personnel and offset the impact of price hikes to allow more input in oil purchase.

Avalanches on Mars snapped
The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration announced Monday that the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has snapped a series of active avalanches near the planet's north pole. It is the first time that human detectors have caught a natural event in action on the surface of Mars.

After a 5-month-long investigation, an Italian court found the late tenor Luciano Pavarotti died with debts of around £7 million, but left behind £4 million in cash and stocks, 18 stage costumes which were noted as "impossible to value", and a string of properties in Italy, the United States and Monte Carlo. The high medical bills for cancer treatment before his death were the main reason for the debts.

Zhang confident of success
Film director Zhang Yimou, who is also director of the opening and closing ceremonies for the Beijing Olympic Games and a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said Monday he "felt sorry" about the resignation of Steven Spielberg, but reiterated the Games' opening ceremony was not affected. "The mass rehearsals, with more than 10000 people involved, are going well," he said, "All the actresses are beautiful."(See photo)

A man was arrested in Los Angeles after making a threat on President George W. Bush's life last week during a phone conversation with a former girlfriend, who called police, authorities said. "I'm going to kill who needs to be killed."

People who do not get enough sleep are more than twice as likely to die of heart disease, according to a British study.
Although the reasons are unclear, researchers said lack of sleep appeared to be linked to increased blood pressure, which is known to raise the risk of heart attacks and stroke.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao pledged to cap China's consumer price index (CPI) growth rate within 4.8% in 2008 to ease the country's mounting pressure of inflation. The country's GDP will grow at around 8% this year, on the basis of "improving the economic structure, productivity, energy efficiency and environmental protection", he said in his "state of the nation" address at the opening of the annual session of the National People's Congress in Beijing Wednesday morning.

US group travel opens soon
Chinese tourists will be able to travel in groups to the United States as early as in June this year, Zhang Xiqin, deputy director of the National Tourism Administration, revealed Wednesday. He said the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on this issue with bilateral negotiations being carried out on some technical problems. Visa procedures will be further simplified once the US tourism market is officially open to China, and it is possible visas will be issued on a group basis, he said.

Zero-emission sports car
Legendary UK manufacturer Morgan is set to unveil a zero-emission concept sports car at the Geneva Motor Show which begins this week. The hydrogen-powered Lifecar produces only water vapor from its exhaust, with a top speed of nearly 100mph (about 160km/h). A spokesman for the company suggested that the vehicle could ultimately be made into something more than a concept vehicle.(See photo)

China's top banker Zhou Xiaochuan refused to rule out the possibility of further interest rate hikes at a press conference Thursday, while pledging to be cautious in using this monetary tool. The US Patent Office confirmed that Microsoft Co. is seeking patent for a software capable of remotely monitoring a worker's productivity, physical wellbeing and competence via wireless sensors. Patent lawyers said that it could be granted within a year. The system can also automatically detect frustration or stress in the worker and offer help accordingly. The technology was previously limited to pilots, firefighters and NASA astronauts.

The Indian government announced a scheme to pay poor families to bring up their girls in an attempt to stop families aborting female fetuses Tuesday. Families in seven states are set to benefit from cash payments amounting to 15500 rupees ($400) to bring up their female children. Girls who reach 18 will get another 100000 rupees ($2500) provided they have completed their education and are not married.
印度发现金奖励育女孩
印度政府4日宣布了一项现金奖励贫苦家庭养育女孩的计划。出台这项政策是为了防止贫苦夫妇抛弃女婴，在政策适用的七个邦，养育女孩的家庭都可获得总数约合400美元的现金奖励，而如果女孩到18岁时仍未婚并已完成学业，则可另外获得约合2500美元的奖金。

The UK government said Thursday it is to ban bottled water at meetings and other official business, and will be drinking tap water starting this summer, amid increasing environmental concerns. Environmental activists argue tap water uses around 300 times less energy than bottled water for its packaging and transport and leaves nothing for disposal.
