A British nuclear-powered submarine, HMS Superb, hit an underwater rock in the northern Red Sea Monday, a Defense Ministry official said Tuesday. The submarine's sonar equipment was damaged and 9 crew members were hurt in the accident, forcing it to surface, the official said.
英国防部官员27日表示，英国皇家海军的"壮丽号"核动力潜艇26日在红海北部海域航行时与一块海底岩石相撞。潜艇的声纳系统严重受损，并有9名海军士兵受伤，潜艇因此被迫浮出海面。

Ministry of Finance allocated RMB200m from the central budget Wednesday to deal with the swelling lakes formed by this month's devastating earthquake in Sichuan. Landslides from the massive earthquake have created 34 quake lakes in the province. Apart from the Tangjiashan Lake, which is presently being drained, 5 others still pose a high risk of rupturing.
中央财政28日向四川省拨付2亿元抢险治理资金，用于支持排除唐家山等堰塞湖险情。截止到26日，四川仍有34座堰塞湖，除正在紧急抢险的唐家山堰塞湖外，还有5座高危级堰塞湖。
Bank frees victims' assets
建行允许取遇难者存款
The Construction Bank of China said Tuesday the legitimate heirs of its clients who died or were missing in the massive Wenchuan earthquake were allowed to transfer or withdraw their financial assets as long as they could provide related proof. The bank also promised exemption of some of the handling charge.
中国建设银行27日表示，汶川大地震中因灾遇难、失踪客户的合法继承人，可凭相关证明材料办理个人金融资产的继承过户或支取手续，部分手续费将免除。
77% five-star rooms booked
北京五星客房77%已订出
77% of Beijing's five-star hotel rooms have been booked for the Olympic Games during August 8-24, and most of the signed hotels have been booked up," Xiong Yumei, deputy director of Beijing's Tourism Bureau, said Tuesday at a press conference on tourism and reception during the event. The average price for a five-star hotel room during the Games stands at RMB3623, 2.6 times the room rate of a year ago.

BEA issues yuan debit cards

The Bank of East Asia, a strategic partner of China UnionPay, began to issue yuan-backed debit cards Tuesday, becoming the first overseas lender to offer the service on the Chinese mainland. The bank also promised to donate RMB5 to the disaster-hit areas in Sichuan for each debit card issued before the end of this year.

China could take place of South Africa to become the world's largest gold producer as its gold yield is expected to reach 300 tons this year, Hou Huimin, deputy director of China Gold Association, said Wednesday during a forum in Shanghai.

Newly diagnosed cases of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among US troops sent to Iraq and Afghanistan were close to 14000, surging nearly 50% in 2007, according to US military data released Tuesday. PTSD, an emotional illness, usually develops in soldiers who have gone through wars. Only 30% of the patients can fully recover from it.

Mongolian storm kills 46
蒙古国沙尘暴致46人亡
The strong sandstorm and snowstorm that hit Mongolia since May 26 has killed 46 people, mostly herdsmen, Mongolian National TV said Thursday. According to the report, the sandstorm will continue for 1 or 2 days, making the search for missing people difficult. The sandstorm also hit North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, bringing a high density of sand and dust to Beijing.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak is on a trip to visit the quake-hit Sichuan Friday afternoon after he finished his visit to Qingdao, Shandong. Lee visited Haier Group and a South Korean enterprise in Qingdao Friday morning.

Vietnam party leader arrives
越共总书记今抵京访华
General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nong Duc Manh arrived in Beijing on Friday, starting a 4-day official good-will visit to China as guest of Chinese President Hu Jintao. Vietnam will also donate 15 tons of relief materials to the quake-hit areas, including tents and milk powder. During Manh's stay, he will visit the Bird's Nest in Beijing and go to Nanjing.

The restrictions on plastic bags will be carried out strictly on schedule and there will be no transition period, officials of Ministry of Commerce said Friday. Supermarkets and shops will be banned from giving out free plastic bags to customers from June 1. The charged plastic bags refer to those holding bought items, baring those used to pack fresh food and cooked food in advance.

The Olympic torch relay will kick off today in Hubei. 624 torchbearers will take part in the 3-days relay, running a total distance of 58.3km, which was adjusted from 123km originally after the earthquake struck Sichuan. The relay will start from Wuhan, then to Yichang and Jingzhou. The flame will pass by the famous Yellow Crane Tower, Wuhan Yangtze Bridge, and the Three Gorges Dam.

A crew of 4 and 10 injured victims were on board when the Mi-171 helicopter (see photo) crashed at 2:56 pm. Rescuers airlifted 2 injured miners who had been stranded Sunday in the mountains of Sichuan for 19 days after the earthquake. Mi Chengfu and Liu Hongkun, aged 51 and 45 respectively, were airlifted by a helicopter with the Hong Kong Government Flying Service at around 10 am Sunday morning and were taken to local hospitals.

The Phoenix Mars Lander might have uncovered a large patch of ice just below the Martian surface, NASA officials said Sunday after looking at images beamed back to the Earth from its landing site in the northern polar region of Mars. Rescue helicopters and more than 10000 soldiers are conducting an intensive search and rescue operation. They are trying to locate a military helicopter with 19 people on board that went missing during quake relief work on May 31. Since the crash site is located among the canyons surrounded by high mountains, the mission is arduous. The 5-member crew, led by experienced pilot Qiu Guanghua, 51, had completed 63 flights since the May 12 quake. Qiu's crew had always completed its missions well. This time the accident occurred in very complicated terrain while there was strong turbulence and fog.

UK's Queen Elizabeth has voiced concern that Prince William should not announce an engagement to his girlfriend Kate Middleton until she has a job, the Daily Mail Sunday reported. The Queen was aware that William's public image could suffer if his wife was not a hard-working career girl.
