President Hu Jintao will visit Yokohama Yamate Chinese School Friday, a learning institution originally initiated by Sun Yat-sen. The students have prepared a lion dance and will recite the Tang poem 'On A Quiet Night' for Hu. The school has a mix of students being comprised of 10% Japanese, 30% Chinese and 60% the offspring of Chinese-Japanese.

Int'l aid lands in Myanmar

The first UN flight carrying 27.5 tons of relief supplies landed in Myanmar Thursday amid fears that the death toll from Cyclone Nargis might hit 100000 and leave a million homeless, a UN official said. Humanitarian aid from seven countries, including China, has so far arrived in Yangon.

To meet growing flight demand before the Olympic Games Singapore Airlines will fly the Airbus A380 super-jumbo daily between Singapore and Beijing on August 2-8. After that, it will revert to the current Boeing 777 aircraft. Singapore Air is the first airline in the world to receive and operate the A380.

For the first time in post-Soviet Russia, over 170 heavy weapons, including tanks and nuclear missile launchers, were launched on Moscow's Red Square Friday in a military parade marking the 63rd anniversary of victory in World War II. Myanmar's refusal to give visas to relief experts is "unprecedented" in the history of humanitarian work, the UN charged Friday. Myanmar is transporting all donated relief supplies to the cyclone-torn areas by using its own helicopters, boats and motor vehicles, according to a foreign ministry's statement published Friday. The UN estimated 1.5m people had been "severely affected" by Cyclone Nargis.

Beijing passengers will have to face security checks by machines, dogs or police officers at all subway stations from the end of June, police source said Friday. Passengers will have to drink bottled water and other beverages they carry into the subway if security machines and police dogs could not identify them.

7.8 quake rocks Sichuan
7.8级地震袭四川
A major earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale jolted Wenchuan County, 92 km northwest of Chengdu, Sichuan, at 2:28 pm Monday, said the State Seismological Bureau. It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties or damage. PM Wen Jiabao is going to the disaster area and a 180-member aid team has been set up. So far 5 people were confirmed dead in Sichuan and Chongqing.
据国家地震台网测定，5月12日下午2时28分，距成都92公里的四川汶川县发生7.8级地震。目前人员伤亡和财产损失暂不清楚。温家宝总理正赶赴灾区指导救灾工作。一支180人的救援队已集结。迄今地震已造成四川和重庆共5人死亡。
Quake felt throughout China

A powerful earthquake rocked Sichuan, shaking buildings and spreading panic in cities as far away as Beijing and the business hub of Shanghai. Many people poured from their buildings but there were no visible signs of damage. The quake was felt in Yunnan, Hunan, Chongqing, Hainan, Jiangxi, Hubei, Zhejiang, Gansu, Henan, Shanxi at 2:00 pm to 2:45 pm Monday.

Food continued to be the biggest driver in consumer inflation, rising 22.1% from a year earlier. The price of meat increased 47.9%, with that of pork surging 68.3%.

US airlifts aid to Myanmar
美首次向缅甸空运物资
Sending a C-130 cargo plane, the US launched its first relief airlift to Myanmar Monday. 2 more air shipments were scheduled to land Tuesday. Myanmar official tally found Sunday a total of 28458 people have lost their lives in the cyclone with 33416 still missing.

Tornadoes and storms rumbled across 3 US states Saturday and killed at least 23 people. By Sunday, about 72000 residents were without electricity. Residents said the tornado created a surreal scene, overturning cars, damaging dozens of homes and throwing mattresses high into the canopy of trees. Weather officials said the storm was moving towards Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

四川强震致近万人死亡
The deadly earthquake has left 9219 people dead in 8 affected provinces and municipalities including Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Chongqing, Yunnan, Shanxi, Guizhou and Hubei, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said in a release issued at 7:00 am Tuesday. Of the dead, 8993 were in Sichuan.
民政部统计，截至13日7时，四川汶川县地震已造成四川、甘肃、陕西、重庆、云南、山西、贵州、湖北8省市共9219人死亡，其中四川达8993人。

Rescuers reach epicenter

Some 1300 rescue and relief troops arrived at Wenchuan County, the epicenter of Monday's major quake with military doctors and soldiers searching for survivors and treating the injured. Parachute relief troops have landed in Mianyang. The road from Dujiangyan to Wenchuan is still blocked by mudslides. Premier Wen Jiabao ordered the removal of barriers and the opening up of roads to the epicenter before 24:00 Tuesday.(See photo)

As of 16:30 Tuesday, over 1950 aftershocks, including 3 over 6 on the Richter scale and 14 between 5 and 6, had been recorded. To better manage the aftershocks, a national team of on-the-spot monitoring in Yunnan, Chongqing, Qinghai, Gansu and Shaanxi was sent to disaster-hit areas.

Airport, rail restart
成都机场铁路多已恢复
Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, which was closed Monday due to the earthquake, has resumed operation Tuesday. The closure has stopped 169 inbound flights and 108 outbound flights. Rail services that were suspended due to the earthquake have been repaired and resumed operation, except those between Baoji and Chengdu, spokesman for the Ministry of Railways said Tuesday. 7 special trains with aid relief supplies and workers will be dispatched to quake-hit areas Tuesday.

The 68 giant pandas at 2 research bases in Chengdu and Ya'an in Sichuan were all safe after Monday's devastating earthquake, the State Forestry Administration reaffirmed on Tuesday. But there is no information on the 64 giant pandas in Wolong base because of communication and transport disruptions.
国家林业局13日透露，四川雅安和成都两个大熊猫基地圈养的68只熊猫未因地震出现伤亡。因通讯和交通中断，目前尚无有关四川卧龙基地64只大熊猫情况的消息。
China Mobile signal resumes
中移动通信站陆续恢复
China Mobile confirmed Tuesday 1850 of its 4457 communications base stations that were interrupted by Monday's strong earthquake have resumed operations, with 2607 still out of service, mostly in Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi. 1/3 of base stations in Dujiangyan are back in service, with the rest being restored.

Quake predicted 5 years ago

Chen Xuezhong, a senior researcher at the State Seismological Bureau, warned in a paper published in 2002 that based on historical records and animal studies, an earthquake measuring above 7 was likely in Sichuan anytime in the next few years. But it didn't receive much attention. Experts have said animals can give advance notice of quakes. On Saturday, hundreds of thousands of toads appeared on the streets of Mianzhu, a city about 60 km southeast of Wenchuan, but local officials said it was because of the weather change.

Pakistan rejoins C'wealth

The Commonwealth Ministers Action Group held a meeting in London Monday and decided to resume Pakistan's Commonwealth membership. On November 22 last year, the Commonwealth suspended Pakistan's membership on the grounds that Pakistan failed in lifting a state of emergency before the deadline (November 23) then set by the organization. Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf declared the state of emergency on November 3 last year, lifting it in December.

Irena Sendler, a Polish woman credited with saving some 2500 Jewish children from the Nazi Holocaust by smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto, some in baskets - died Monday. She was 98. Sendler masterminded risky rescue operations under the pretext of inspecting sanitary conditions during a typhoid outbreak in 1939.
