The mascots for the 16th Asian Games to be held in Guangzhou in 2010 were unveiled Monday evening. They are five lively sheep called Leyangyang. Their names are A Xiang, A He, A Ru, A Yi and Leyangyang and mean "lucky and happy" together, which also represents the wishes the Games will bring good luck, harmony and happiness to Asians.
28日晚，将于2010年在广州举行的第16届亚运会吉祥物揭晓。吉祥物乐羊羊是运动时尚的五只羊，分别取名"阿祥"、"阿和"、"阿如"、"阿意"和"乐羊羊"，组成"祥和如意乐洋洋"，表达广州亚运将给亚洲人民带来"吉祥、和谐、幸福、圆满和快乐"的美好祝愿。
Officials sacked for collision

Chen Gong and Chai Tiemin, respectively former director and former Party secretary of Jinan Railway Bureau in Shandong, were sacked and subjected to an investigation Monday as the death toll from the train crash has risen to 70. Another 416 were injured. Some 1000 soldiers and 700 reservists are helping with rescue work.

Swiss banks rethink after loss

Banks should rethink corporate governance and strengthen rules to maintain Switzerland's reputation as a top financial center, said the country's top banker recently. The remarks came after the country's biggest bank UBS announced massive write-downs of over $37b.

Sinopec, China's largest oil refiner, announced Sunday its net profit in Q1 slumped to RMB6.701b in spite of a RMB7.4b government subsidy, much lower than the RMB19.582b net profit in the same period last year. Without the subsidy, Sinopec would have lost RMB700m, the first time it has seen losses in the primary business after its 2001 debut on the A-share market.
中石化27日公布，计入政府74亿元补贴等所有因素后，其第一季度净利润67.01亿元，远低于去年同期的195.82亿元。若无政府补贴，中石化一季度亏损约7亿元，是2001年登陆A股以来首次出现主营业务亏损。
Indian rocket lifts into space

An Indian PSLV-C9 rocket blasted into space at 9:20 am local time Monday from the Sriharikota space station in southern India, carrying an Indian remote-sensing satellite, a mini satellite and 8 nanosatellites developed by German and Canadian research institutions, local media reported.
印度媒体报道，当地时间28日9时20分，一枚印度PSLV-C9火箭搭载10颗卫星在该国南部的斯里赫里戈达航天发射场升空。10颗卫星中包括一颗印度遥感卫星、一颗印度微型卫星，以及德国和加拿大的8颗纳米卫星。

Russia's parliament Friday approved the establishment of a state-funded museum, archive and library, as part of the "Russian President's Centre for Historical Legacy" for Putin to preserve his legacy. 20 kids die from virus
阜阳病毒感染1520人
A total of 20 children have died and 1520 others fallen ill in an outbreak of a lethal intestinal virus in Fuyang, a city in Anhui, since March. So far 585 kids have been released from hospitals. All of the victims were aged below 6, the majority under the age of 2.
截至4月29日，安徽阜阳儿童感染肠道病毒EV71的病例已上升为1520例，死亡20例，已有585名患儿痊愈出院。据悉，所有受害儿童年龄均在6岁以下，大多数为两岁以下。
Hu to visit Japan May 6-10

President Hu Jintao will pay a state visit to Japan from May 6 to 10, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu announced Tuesday at a press briefing. She says Hu is expected to meet with Emperor Akihito and hold talks with Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.

The Chinese Embassy in Indonesia confirmed Tuesday that five Chinese citizens who worked for a mining firm in Aceh province were kidnapped by gunmen over the weekend and held as hostages. A group of gunmen abducted seven Chinese workers and an Indonesian citizen Saturday evening. Two Chinese hostages were released Sunday to deliver the ransom demand of 300m rupiah ($32633).

Vietnam will host the Olympic torch relay for the first time Tuesday evening. The relay will start from the Opera House in Ho Chi Minh City at around 6pm local time and end at a stadium, covering a route of 10 km. This is the last leg of the Olympic flame's global journey. After Ho Chi Minh City, the flame will head to Hong Kong.

Speeding was the cause for Monday's deadly train collision in Shandong that killed 70 and injured 416 others, said the investigation panel Tuesday set up by the State Council. The Qingdao-Jinan Railway reopened to traffic early Tuesday, after more than 20 hours of interruption.

30 people were sentenced to jail terms ranging from three years to life in connection with the Lhasa violence on March 14, the Intermediate People's Court of Lhasa ruled at an open court session Tuesday. More than 1000 children, aged between 9 and 16 from poor families in Liangshan, Sichuan, were lured to Dongguan, Guangdong, to work as cheap factory labor, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported Monday. A citywide drive has been launched to rescue children in Dongguan following the report. So far, police have rescued more than 100 kids and arrested several people.

Smuggled grain found

Customs officers in Guangdong and Yunnan have discovered cases of small-scale grain smuggling to Hong Kong, Macao and Vietnam, as overseas grain prices are much higher, China Customs revealed on Monday. Rice is sold at about RMB3.5/kg on the international market, more than 4 times higher than the domestic price of about RMB0.75/kg.

Hangzhou Bay sea-crossing bridge, the world's longest of its kind, opened to traffic on a trial operation at midnight following a grand inauguration ceremony Thursday afternoon. New standards on plastic bags

China Thursday officially issued the national standards on plastic shopping bags, which stipulate the thickness of such bags should be at least 0.025 mm, and an environmental-protection statement is mandatory. The new standards, to be enforced into law starting June 1, also set out the types of plastic bags to facilitate consumer use and recycling.

There will be no parking lots for personal cars at all Olympic venues, said Yu Chunquan, transportation director of the Beijing Olympic organizing committee. Spectators need to get to the venues by bus or subway. The Beijing traffic authority will arrange 34 special bus lines to the venues, with some offering 24-hour service.

Neurologist Natalie Wiendels says the vast majority of people who suffer from chronic headaches take too many painkillers.
