With approval from the State Council, the Ministry of Finance and State Administration of Taxation has cut the stamp tax on stock trading to 0.1% from the current 0.3% starting from Thursday. Experts say the long-expected concrete support measure is to give a strong boost to Chinese stock market.
经国务院批准，财政部、国家税务总局决定从4月24日起，将证券(股票)交易印花税税率由现行的千分之三调整为千分之一。专家预测，这项期待已久的重大利好将刺激中国股市上扬。

Organizers of the Beijing Olympics announced Wednesday the third round of domestic ticket sales will be from May 5 to June 9. A total of 1.38 million tickets for 16 sports will be on sale. The ticket designs were also unveiled Wednesday, featuring the National Stadium, known as the Bird's Nest, and "lucky clouds" as the main visual elements.
北京奥组委23日公布奥运会境内公众第三阶段售票时间。5月5日至6月9日，将投放16大项共138万张门票。08年奥运会门票设计方案也于当日亮相，票面以"鸟巢"和祥云的图形为主要视觉元素。

Torch relayed in Canberra

The Beijing Olympic Torch Relay kicked off at 8:30am Thursday (Beijing Time 6:30am Thursday) in Australia's Canberra, the 15th stop of its global journey. The relay started from Civic Square near Lake Burley Griffin and will end at Federal Park, covering a length of 15km and involving 80 torchbearers. The torch's next stop is Nagano, Japan.
当地时间24日早8点30分(北京时间24日6点30分)，北京奥运圣火在澳大利亚堪培拉开始境外第15站传递。接力在格里芬湖畔和解广场开始，在联邦公园结束，全长15公里，共有80名火炬手参加。火炬传递下一站是日本长野。

Lunar rover prototype built

Chinese scientists have built prototype of the country's third-generation lunar rover module, which was unveiled in Shanghai Wednesday. The prototype has a 1.2m-long mechanical arm that can collect mineral samples on the moon, and self-navigation software. China plans to land its first lunar rover module on the moon in 2013.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closed 9.29% higher at 3583.03 points on Thursday, the biggest gain since Oct 23, 2001, as an overnight stock trading tax cut boosted investors' confidence. The Shenzhen Component Index ended trading at 12914.76 points, up 9.59%. Nearly 1000 stocks rose by the 10% daily limit, and only two fell.

In the last three years, more people are interested in being buried in tombs on the mountains behind the Three Gorges Park in Yunyang County, Chongqing, each covering around 15 square meters. Local villagers say government officials, and wealthy people paid for most of the cemeteries for themselves or their relatives.

Zheng Zhihong, a former pilot with China Eastern Airlines' Yunnan subsidiary, was ordered to pay RMB1.4m in training fees for quitting though his act did not constitute a breach of faith, the Kunming Intermediate Court ruled Thursday. China Eastern had asked for RMB12.57m in compensation last year.

The US Naval Criminal Investigative Service recently concluded a two-year-long investigation into fraudulent marriages, with 40 convicted. The illegal husbands, mostly navy sailors, got an increase in their housing allowances, plus payments of $1000-6000 from their brides, mainly from Eastern European countries, who in return got the fast track to green cards, and possibly, citizenship.

Teachers strike over pay

More than 8000 schools across the UK were forced to close Thursday as teachers went on strike for the first time in over two decades. The strike called by members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) is over a proposed pay deal, under which teachers will get a pay rise of 2.45%. But the NUT says the rise should be closer to 4% which is in line with the Retail Price Index.

Tibet reopens to tourists

On Thursday Tibet received its first mainland tour group since the March 14 unrest in Lhasa. Tibet will reopen to Hong Kong and Taiwan tourists starting May 1, according to the regional government. CCTV to launch HDTV channel

China Central Television (CCTV) Friday announced it was to launch a comprehensive high-definition channel on May 1 to offer a better Olympics broadcast service. The channel, called "CCTV-HD", will air sports, TV plays, entertainment and music programs 24 hours a day. At present, only eight cities, namely Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Shenyang, Qingdao, Qinhuangdao, Guangzhou and Shenzhen can receive HDTV programs.

An early Monday train collision in Shandong has caused 66 deaths and 247 injuries so far, with 70 in critical condition. The passenger train T195, from Beijing to Qingdao, derailed in the city of Zibo in Shandong at 4:43 am. About 10 carriages toppled into a ditch. The derailed train hit train 5034, from Yantai to Xuzhou, and caused the latter to veer off its tracks. The accident was caused by human error. Authorities have ruled out the possibility of terrorist acts.
