The Beijing Olympic Torch Relay concluded Sunday evening (Beijing Time) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the eighth stop as well as the only African leg of its global journey. Six Tanzanian ministers acted as torchbearers, making it the highest-profile stopover up to now. The flame now heads to the Omani capital Muscat.
北京时间4月13日晚，北京奥运圣火在坦桑尼亚的达累斯萨拉姆市结束了境外第八站，也是唯一非洲城市的传递。共有六位部长级火炬手参与传递活动，成为迄今规格最高的一站。火炬传递的下站是阿曼首都马斯喀特。

St Xavier University in Chicago was closed indefinitely Saturday after receiving death notes at a students' residence on April 10. One of them read, "Be prepared to die on April 14." Similar notes were also uncovered at the dorm on April 5. All 5700 students were asked to leave campus by noon Saturday for security reasons.

China has allocated RMB1.9b to college students as a food subsidy to offset the burden of rising inflation. With the move, college students across the country can get more RMB20 each month from March to June. Those from financially vulnerable families can receive RMB40, said an education ministry spokesman Sunday.
教育部有关负责人4月13日透露，为减轻因物价上涨给大学生带来的生活压力，中央和地方财政共拨专款19亿元。财政部、教育部在今年3至6月间向全国2000万本专科生、研究生额外发放每人每月20元的生活补贴，并在此基础上对约1/5的家庭困难学生再补贴20元，目前资金已落实到位。

The Beijing Olympic torch relay in Oman's Muscat, the ninth leg of its global odyssey, drew to an end at 20:30 Monday (00:30 Tuesday Beijing time). A report by Merrill Lynch pointed out the world's grain reserves, including wheat, rice and corn, could only meet the global demand of 60 days, a record low for 25 years. Experts noted, the Chinese mainland rice market remains stable due to its relative independence and small import and export volume.

13-year-old German boy Nico Marquardt challenged NASA in estimating the chances of an asteroid hitting the Earth. Nico calculated there was a 1 in 450 chance that the Apophis asteroid will collide with Earth in his research for a regional science competition, quite different from NASA's result of 1 in 45000. The boy argued that scientists at NASA had got it wrong but the US institution clarified that its figures were correct.

The National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest, is embracing its first test event - the Good Luck Beijing Race-Walking Challenge Friday. The tickets sold well as the event marks the first time it opens to the public. Four test events - race-walking, marathon, water ballet, and fence-play - will be held respectively at the Bird's Nest, Water Cube and National Conference Center's Fencing Gymnasium on April 16-20.

CEA fined RMB1.5m
'返航门'东航被罚150万
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) concluded Thursday that the flights of China Eastern Airlines (CEA), which turned around on March 31 and April 1, were the result of some pilots who ignored the passengers' rights and interests rather than technical reasons. CAAC stripped CEA of some routes in Yunnan plus a fine of RMB1.5m. Insiders say 11 pilots are temporarily being grounded.

The construction of the 1318km-long Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway started this morning in Beijing. Premier Wen Jiabao attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the RMB220.9 billion project. Travel along the railway is expected to reach speeds of up to 350kmph. Its construction and design utilizes domestic technology.

A study in Sweden and the United States found that people using a cell phone before bedtime take longer to get into deep sleep and spend less time in the deepest part of sleep. It is because cell phones affect the areas of the brain responsible for activating and co-coordinating the stress system, making it harder for people to fall asleep, researchers said.
