Chinese shares prices tumbled more than 4% after consecutive days of falling on Monday. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index ended at 4,192.53, down 177.75 points, or 4.07%. The Shenzhen Component Index lost 692.85 points, or 4.28 percent, to close at 15,486.67. The combined turnover on the two bourses stood at ￥138.16b.

China's first spacewalk
China plans to carry out its first spacewalk in the second half of the year, an official of the nation's manned space program said Thursday. The Shenzhou VII spacecraft will be launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the northwestern province of Gansu and the astronauts will leave their spacecraft for the first time. The spacecraft will also release a small inspection satellite, which monitors its own performance.

More eligible non-Communists are expected to become high-ranking officials in China, said Wu Jianmin, spokesman for the First Session of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). Wan Gang of the China Zhi Gong Dang was appointed Minister of Science and Technology last April as the first non-Communist Party cabinet minister since the late 1970s. In two months, Chen Zhu, non-party member, became Minister of Health.

Boeing loses Pentagon deal
In a surprising reversal for the Boeing Company, the Pentagon awarded a $40b contract, one of the largest at the Pentagon, for 179 refueling tankers to a partnership between Northrop Grumman and EADS, the European parent of Airbus. US lawmakers have reacted angrily to the deal, which puts a critical US military contract into the hands of foreigners.

A seven-year-old boy Niu Zai is a computer expert in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Niu, a grade one pupil, is the youngest IT technician in Guangxi. He was installing software like Windows 98 and Windows XP when he was only three. He was able to use DOS systems and download computer games at the age of four. Post-80s debut at CPPCC
The 11th National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) convened their first annual session Monday afternoon in Beijing. A total of 2237 memebers were elected to the 11th CPPCC National Committee, which also marks the first debuts of the post-80s generation. Famous female tennis player Yan Zi, "flying man" Liu Xiang, and Li Zhaohui, Chairman of Haixin Iron and Steel Group, all born in the early 1980s, are among the youngest CPPCC members.

Biggest plastic plant closes
Huaqiang, China's largest plastic bag manufacturer, has recently announced it was closing down and quitting the plastic manufacturing industry due to an environmental drive that imposed limits on the use of certain types of bags from June 1, 2008. The factory, located in Luohe County, Henan Province, produced 60% of the country's plastic bags before the closure, with more than 90% of its products now on the limited list.
