YouTube Smart Search hits Maxthon 3!

Maxthon 3 Browser
At long last the Maxthon 3 Browser started supporting extensions!
To celebrate this event, YouTube Smart Search was ported to the new Maxthon extensions platform and is now available for download from the official Maxthon Extension Center.
The version available for Maxthon is identical in all ways to the Google Chrome version and contains the exact same features and all cumulative bug fixes. We hope you'll enjoy instant-searching YouTube videos like a boss now in Maxthon (in addition to Chrome) and don't forget to give a review and a 5 stars rating ;)

For those who are unfamiliar with the Maxthon browser, it is a very innovative browsing platform that is built around 2 different rendering engines: WebKit and Trident. it has a solid JavaScript framework, built-in Ad Blocking, Translation, Reader mode (just like the new iOS Safari reader) and self-recovery mechanisms for when a single tab is acting funny. It also sports nice gestures-based controls that allow you to browse the web intuitively with swipes anywhere on the screen. For power-users, Maxthon offers advanced features such as chromium developer tools, page-region or full-page snapshots &  Resource Sniffing (Save YouTube videos anyone?). According to the official Maxthon website, "Each month more than 130,000,000 people use Maxthon's web browser in more than 140 countries around the world."

*Maxthon's extension platform works only in utlra mode so make sure that you are surfing the YouTube website in Ultra mode.

The latest YouTube face-lift broke the integration of the SmartSearch extension. As a result, the "Watch later" button stopped working.
No worries! Version 1.2 of YouTube SmartSearch fixes this issues and allows you to regain instant search functionality and add videos to you "Watch later" right from the video page.

YouTube SmartSearch supports Cosmic Panda & HTML5

YouTube SmartSearch supports Cosmic Panda & HTML5 previews
Cosmic Panda, the new look-n-feel from YouTube, is currently available as an opt-in beta. The new design brings larger video icons, new ways of playing and managing playlists and an awesome new feature that allows you to continue on watching your video while scrolling around the page and reading comments and video suggestions. Obviously a great companion to this ability is the YouTube SmartSearch that allows you to also search & queue more videos for watching them later.
You can opt-in to the CosmicPanda preview here: http://www.youtube.com/cosmicpanda

In addition, YouTube have been running their HTML5 opt-in beta. This program allow users to watch videos without a having the Adobe Flash plugin installed and should provide a better solution over the heavy flash player currently in use.
You can opt-in to the HTML5 preview here: http://www.youtube.com/html5

The YouTube SmartSearch extension, version 1.1, supports both of these previews and may be used seamlessly with any opt-in combination of your liking.
YouTube has may other opt-in previews, but not all of them supported. for instance the feather beta is not currently supported (for obvious reasons - it's supposed to be a lightweight page)

Get the SmartSearch extension here: http://www.chromeextensions.org/utilities/youtube-smart-search/ or download from this blog.

Enjoy the Vidz!

1,000 downloads - only the beginning

After the YouTube Instant Search extension has been passing around from friend to friend on facebook, twitter, Quora and tech forums – We’ve reached our first 1,000 downloads milestone!

Since the download count is cumulative over both this website and the chromeextensions website it’s hard to know exactly when did the 1,000th download happen – but it was a nice surprise after the weekend! In the meantime, you can help out by spreading the word and continue to send more suggestions, ideas and bugs our way

Once one last roadblock is removed and the extension is accepted into the official Chrome Store we will start seeing much higher download rates. But in the meantime - we can celebrate the first 1K J

An endorsement offer has been made by the Internet Lab of the Hebrew University but we decided to continue publishing the extension independently. However, we do want to give props to the Internet Lab which encouraged the development of this extension under the guidance of Ohad Assulin

More YouTube SmartSearch (Instant Search) goodness coming your way soon.

Several users have contacted me saying they've had problems downloading and installing the YouTube SmartSearch extension on their Chrome browsers from this website.
Due to this, I've uploaded the extension to the ChromesExtensions website to since it seemed more adequate, plus they have a nice versioning system there.

You can get the extension at:

P.S you can still get the extension right here.

First release

posted Mar 30, 2011 7:22 AM by E-dan Bloch   [ updated Apr 5, 2011 2:48 AM ]

This is the first release of the YouTube Smart Search extension for Google Chrome.

Have you ever tried searching for a video on YouTube in the midst of watching another video? It stops the current video, and changes to a new page that shows you the search results. Annoying, right?
Well not anymore; enter YouTube SmartSearch! An extension for Google Chrome that fixes this annoyance and then some.
The extension will display search results elegantly within the same YouTube page you're currently on and allows you to watch, queue or add a video result to a playlist with a click on a mouse.

The final features include:
  • Instant Search - You will see results while you type, just like in Google Instant.
  • Customizable - Control the different aspects of searching and result display. Settings page will appear when the extension icon is clicked.
  • High performance - Results appear lightning fast.
How do you use it? simple! after a quick installation, just surf to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com) on google chrome browser and type in the search bar on the top part of the page.

To install just save the attachedYouTubeSmartSearch.crx file (find it after the comments) to your computer and drag onto your Google Chrome browser window.
Feel free to share with your friends and encourage them (and yourself!) to send feedback.

*If you receive a warning that the extension is unsigned or "may be unsafe" just ignore it.

[Edit: added some screenshots, below.]

Enjoy,

E.B
