TIME FOR DEVOTION

TIME FOR DEVOTION

I Tim 4:5 "for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer".  The content of this verse is basically telling us that as we spend time in prayer and in reading the word of God, there is a sanctification process going on in our lives at the same time.

It takes discipline to come to a point where we can spend time in devotion and prayer.  Some are already there, but for some it is lacking, and I dare say for some it is almost non-existent.   Discipline, discipline, discipline…..did I say "discipline"?  It is an effort of the will, sacrifice, and prioritization to come to a point in our lives where we DO spend quality time with the Lord.  "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak".

I want to encourage all of you to increase in these two things: reading God's word and prayer.  We are all increasing in so many other things: wealth, education, age, weight (for some of us), recreation, friends, etc…but are we increasing in the needful things?

We have to "present our bodies as a living sacrifice" to get this done.  Like the animals brought and tied to the altar for sacrifice, we need to come and just tie ourselves willingly in the presence of the Lord and spend time with Him.

J Oswald Chambers puts it so beautifully in his book My Utmost for His Highest; "Are you saying, "But I can't be expected to live a sanctified life in my present circumstances; I have no time for prayer or Bible study right now; besides, my opportunity for battle hasn't come yet, but when it does, of course I will be ready"? No, you will not. If you have not been worshiping in everyday occasions, when you get involved in God's work, you will not only be useless yourself but also a hindrance to those around you.   God's training ground, where the missionary weapons are found, is the hidden, personal, worshiping life of the saint."
