Young Genius Educational center is running one of the strongest Speech & Debate
programs in the Bay Area. The clear intent of our classes is to prepare students to compete in
Middle and High School tournaments held in the Bay Area. We encourage our students to participate in tournaments, but it not necessary. After our Speech & Debate course, students enhance their reading comprehension and writing skills as well as increase GPA. When you put a record of your participation in Speech/Debate tournaments on your high school or college application, it will give you greater chance to be accepted by a desirable school. With debate training, students score higher on SAT and other standardized tests. Minh A. Luong, an Associate Director at Yale University says: " In my opinion, there is no better activity that will develop essential academic, professional, and life skills than dedicated involvement in speech and debate.Colleges and employers are actively seeking these skills and when it comes to selecting extracurricular activities, like many other things in life, those savvy high school students who will win admission to the best schools will select quality over quantity." http://www.nflonline.org/uploads/Rostrum/crnov00_luongcollegeadmissions.pdf By providing children with the venue to speak, clarify thoughts, and research ideas, active participants of our debate class are able to gain greater experience and critique which improve their personal and future professional communication skills. During our speech/debate courses, students will learn public speaking, cross examination, basic research, and critical thinking in order to construct a set of arguments to defend their position. As there is more than one format being used, students will be prepared for the type of debate done in their area. Current classes being run by

Dear Don, We just wanted to take a moment and introduce ourselves and our program to you. You probably already know that Saint Mary’s College of California is a premiere private Liberal Arts college in the beautiful hills of Moraga, California. What you may not know is that SMC also has a young and growing forensics program which supports a vibrant debate and speech team. Current team members compete in parliamentary debate, platform speaking, and limited preparation speaking. Our team is small and we like it that way. We don’t exceed 10 team members: 5 debate teams, whose members also compete in individual events. This way, each select member gets individual attention. Our program, because of its size, also has the flexibility and resources to pick and choose where we compete, thanks to the generous support of SMC alum and our benefactor, John Macken. To help support our team members, Mr. Macken and the college offer a variety of scholarship opportunities, which are listed below. For very well qualified candidates, the scholarships add up and make attending SMC easier than many public and private colleges and universities. Click here for application materials. We hope you might pass this along to those who may be interested in this opportunity. And, we thank you for allowing us this brief introduction! If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at forensics@stmarys.edu. Or, you can contact the Director of Forensics, Dr. Cathy B. Glenn, directly at cbg2@stmarys-ca.edu or 925.631.4347.
