quote (poem): Rumi, learning to fly

The way of love is not a subtle argument.
The door there is devastation.
Birds make great sky-circles of their freedom.
How do they learn it?
They fall, and falling, they're given wings.

quote & musings: Tim Miller weekend

posted Dec 8, 2009 2:18 PM by Kate Lumsden   [ updated Dec 8, 2009 6:31 PM ]

"Get out of the way girl!" Says my atman (or higher self) to my ego. :)

This weekend, I got to practice with Tim Miller, one of the most seasoned Ashtangis in America. I had practiced with him two years ago when he visited San Francisco, and enjoyed his firm, traditional approach to Ashtanga within a kind relaxed approach to life.

While I had been teaching for a year when I first practiced with Tim, it was much different having taught for three and practicing this time. My anxiety about my ability to 'perform' was gone and instead replaced with giggles when I struggled with things that I know Tim wanted me to with more ease as he gave me an eye that said "Puh-leez, that's your pose? Come on now! Leg higher!" Or at least that's what I read it to mean, who ever knows.

While I wasn't worried about my ability to 'perform', that doesn't mean I didn't dread a pose. Just one in particular: Garba Pindasana. Put your legs in lotus, stick your arms though your legs, then roll around on the floor 8 times and then enter an arm balance. (see attached video, pretty funny, no?) My arms don't love going through my lotus. One fellow student said she thinks it's more painful than childbirth--- no fun. So I was really looking forward to doing a led primary series practice with Tim when I remembered Garba P, ugh! What a pain! The practice starts and while normally its an individual self-guided practice that requires much concentration, here, all I needed to do was follow instructions; what a luxury! When Garba Pindasana came around what happened, but I slid my arms through my lotus, rolled around relatively effortlessly and even got the arm balance!! I could hardly believe it!

It's amazing the power we have when we just take a moment to step out of our own way. This season often brings a lot of anticipation of the future (the holidays or the new year) varying from excitement to dread. This winter, try a practice of acknowleding your attachments and aversions to future times and then allowing those times to meet you in the present where you can possess a sense of curiousity and openness to whatever may come. Hostile situations are much less hostile when we are relaxed and kind, and wonderful times are even more enjoyable when we least expect them.

Let us be respectively aware, Life and death are of supreme importance.
Time swiftly passes by, and with it our only chance.
Each of us must aspire to awaken.
Be aware: do not squander our life.
  (Buddhist prayer)

musings: Random Acts of Kindness

posted Dec 3, 2009 10:58 AM by Kate Lumsden

This morning I was talking to my mom on the phone while riding the bus when suddenly the battery on my phone died and our call was cut off. My mom is overseas at present, and can, like all mothers, worry about her daughters. So, I hopped off the bus with my phone charger in hand (yes, I had my charger on me) and walked into the corner store at Fillmore and Hayes. The nicest man works there. I asked if I could use an outlet as I had just been cut off from my mom and wanted to let her know not to worry. The man was exceptionally nice, said "of course!" and plugged my phone into the socket at the wall. As I stood waiting for my phone to get some juice, I smelled wonderful incense burning. I asked him what kind it was, and he pointed to the incense on the counter. I said, "I'd like to get one." He said that there was no need, and I told him that I did in fact really like the smell.

...and so now I'm home. My mom knows I'm safe. And have a wonderful smell wafting through my loft as I appreciate the kindness of strangers. :)
