What is Yoga?

Yoga means different things to different people. For some, it is the physical workout they enjoy doing once or twice a week. For others, it is a wonderfully relaxing time-out from their stress-filled lives; or a means of increasing self-awareness; a tool for stilling their mind; a path to meditation; or a discipline of the will; a good stretch after the gym; a means of accessing their "chi"; a spiritual practice which enables them to feel closer to the divine. For me, yoga is a journey through all of these, a journey that brings us closer to our ideal self in body, mind and spirit, inspires us to be the best that we can be and opens us up to us see the best in others as well as in ourselves.

The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. We can think yoga as the union of the mind, body and spirit.

Yoga can change our body, our health, our mind, our breathing patterns, our attitudes, our outlook, our life. By observing ourselves (in our yoga practice), we gain new insights into the workings of our mind and body, and so we develop more self- awareness. Through this awareness, we can allow change.

Hatha yoga seeks to promote health and well-being through physical exercise. It is all about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. The regular practice of postures and breathing exercises has a profound effect on the circulation and on the functioning of the inner organs, glands and nerves, keeping all systems in optimal health and leading to greater energy, better concentration, and a happier, more fulfilling life. Many common physical ailments can also be improved through the regular practice of yoga, and it is never too late or too early in life to take it up. Anyone can practice yoga. And that includes you.
