I believe that “health” is not only about the physical element, and that health should be seen in a holistic way - as the WHO (World Health Organisation) describes below:
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
And now, spiritual and environmental factors must be added, in this context.
Indeed health must include all aspects of our life which are interdependent on each other - and this principle corresponds to my view of Yoga.
I believe Yoga is for everyone - to unite our world of mind, body, and spirit; which are interwoven in our life, so that anybody can practice Yoga, regardless of age, gender, nationality, religion, sexual orientation and physical ability. I promote regular Yoga practice as the way you can increase your general well being.
I would like to help you to use Yoga practice as a tool in the following way:
- your body – is the temple of your divine soul. So look after it properly through posture work and build up a healthy and strong body.
- your breath - is a powerful tool for controlling your mind. Proper breathing practice will give you the choice to alter your mood. It will also help you to calm the mind.
- your mind – is constantly fluctuating and can be stuck with habitual thinking patterns. Develop self-awareness through meditation; come out from this vicious circle without being overtaken by your emotions and life events.
For me, Yoga is not only a physical exercise, I see Yoga as a way of life for individuals who want to realise the true divinity within the Self.
It doesn’t matter what “divinity” means to you and which beliefs you hold. But it must be connecting with your higher self, and this may be called a “goal” or “purpose”. And taking a small step for change is Yoga. Yoga must be action for change.
