Team News 10/20/09

posted ‎‎Oct 20, 2009 7:20 PM‎‎ by East Liverpool YMCA WaveRunners

Our first swim meet is this Saturday (10/24) at Grove City. Driving directions are available on our team web site (click here).

Our warm-up time is 8:00 am.

Swimmers must be at the Grove City YMCA by 7:30 am ready to get their event numbers. Swimmers' events are determined by the coaches for both individual and relay events. Swimmers can be entered in up to 3 individual and 2 relay events.

What swimmers should bring to the meet:
  • team suit (black, any brand), plus 1 extra suit; girls must wear a one-piece suit, boys should wear a jammer-style suit
  • goggles, plus 1 extra
  • team swim cap (if you don't have one please see an officer, we have a limited number available for purchase for $11.00)
  • something to wear on your feet (Crocks, flip-flops, etc)
  • towels
  • warm clothes to change into after you're done swimming
  • healthy snacks, water (Grove City will probably have a concession stand, too)
  • something to do while you're resting between events (a book, game, etc)--bring electronics (cell phone, iPod, DS) at your own risk
  • something to sit on (blanket, sleeping bag)
Please do not leave the swim meet without checking in with a seeder (the person who makes sure you are lined up for your events), in case relay events have been changed.

Important reminder for swimmers: Grove City uses touch pads for electronic timing on all races but 25 meters, you must hit the wall hard with your hands to stop the clock.

What parents should bring to the meet:
  • chair to sit on in the gym while waiting between events (please bring a towel to protect the gym floor)
  • a Sharpie marker to write event numbers
The Grove City YMCA's pool is similar to the Calcutta YMCA's, there is very limited seating on the deck. Parents sit in the gym with the swimmers and go into the pool area to watch their events.

If a swimmer cannot attend Saturday's meet at the last minute, please call Heidi Meredith (cell: 330-692-7962) or Bill Smith (cell: 330-386-0945) Saturday morning.

For new swimming parents:
  • don't be concerned if your swimmer is entered in only 1-2 individual events at the beginning of the season; if you have a beginning swimmer, it will take time to learn all 4 stokes
  • don't be concerned if your swimmer is DQ'ed (disqualified)--swimming is a learning experience, every swimmer has been DQ'ed at some time
  • always encourage your swimmer to better his or her time, don't worry about winning a race
Grove City has a very competitive swim team (ie, they win lots of races), but it is a good experience for our swimmers; our goal is to see each swimmer improve his or her time.

More information for new swimming parents can be found on our team web site (click here).
