Achievements

These twenty-one high school students earned several awards including recognition as a Premier Delegation. Individual delegates earned awards including Outstanding Statesmen, Outstanding Press Delegate, and Outstanding Proposal. Joe Gipson, a recent graduate of Catholic High School in Baton Rouge and rising LSU freshman, was named one of six Presiding Officers for the 2011 conference.

Outstanding Statesmen: Joe Gipson, Catholic High School

Outstanding Statesmen are recognized by the conference leadership as delegates, who not only debate well, but also exhibit poise and tact.

Outstanding Media Delegate: Karin Shultz, University High School

Outstanding Media Delegates are recognized by the conference leadership as a member of the Media Program who has distinguished him/herself by extraordinary effort, writing and commitment to the conference media coverage.

Outstanding Proposal: Wesley Howden, Mandeville High School – Proposal to hold any private security or military contractor subject to the terms of the Geneva Convention and hold such contractors accountable for any crimes committed overseas.

There were eleven outstanding proposals recognized at the 2010 conference for depth of research and quality of composition.

Two delegates from Louisiana also saw their proposals progress to the final round of debate. Sam Ingalls, of Mandeville, debated his proposal to eliminate the tax exemption status for religious organizations. It narrowly failed to pass after several rounds of heated debate. Joe Gipson’s proposal to mandate the production of a “laymen’s terms document” to accompany all federal legislation won passage of the entire conference during the Plenary session, where the eight best proposals of the conference are debated.
