RESEARCH
Lu received a Ph.D. in Sociology and an M.S. in Biostatistics from UCLA in 2008. Her research areas include social demography and social stratification. She is particularly interested in examining causes and consequences of migration and immigration, and how migration intersects with socioeconomic and health inequality across diverse contexts. She is currently working on the following projects. ◦ Cross-national comparison of children affected by migration, especially children left behind by migrant parents. This research conceptualizes migration as both socioeconomic and psychosocial processes with multiple impacts on child health and development. It aims to identify under what circumstances children benefit or suffer from migration or parental out-migration. This project uses national data from several settings characterized by large-scale internal or international migration, including China, Indonesia, and Mexico. In collaboration with colleagues, Lu is also developing a national survey on internal migration and children in China, which will permit a comprehensive assessment of the well-being of children affected by migration and underlying mechanisms. ◦ Internal migration and inequality in China. This line of research examines patterns of educational and labor market inequalities in the context of internal migration and China’s unique institutional arrangements (the hukou system). — Educational outcomes and psychosocial adaptation of migrant children — Accumulation of social capital among migrants, and the role of social capital in labor market inequalities encountered by migrants — Changing patterns of inequality between migrants and urbanites over time, and how it is shaped by state institutions and market mechanisms ◦ Comparative research of immigration and assimilation. This research examines the process of immigration and immigrant assimilation across various contexts of exit and reception. — How is the social process of different streams of Chinese international migration conditioned by distinct sending and receiving contexts — How do patterns of immigrant selection and assimilation and progress of the second generation vary in the U.S. and Canada, and how the differences can be explained by immigration and integration policies and by social and economic institutions
