Dear Yee Wei,
|
More than a year after Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar and the earthquake in Sichuan
in southwest China, your donation continues to help Red Cross provide
ongoing assistance as survivors work to rebuild their lives.
Securing the future in Myanmar
Soon after the Cyclone hit Myanmar our Disaster Response Team water
module was transported by boat to affected communities, capable of
pumping out 5,000 litres of clean water every hour. Local technicians
continue to work with the module in communities where traditional water
sources are still damaged.
Handed
over to Myanmar Red Cross last year, the water treatment module plays a
vital role in providing water through the dry season. Read more about
our Disaster Response Team water module.

Many survivors have had little opportunity to earn an income since the
cyclone and they struggle with debt. Red Cross livelihoods and
emotional recovery programs aim to engage and empower affected
communities to fully participate in rebuilding their lives. Read volunteer and survivor stories from Myanmar.
Helping communities in China recover and prepare
The recovery effort in Sichuan has already built thousands of houses, schools and medial clinics, while other Red Cross programs
help people set up new ways of making money to support their families,
and provide households with clean water. The financial cost of the
earthquake is estimated at up to 15 years income, for those affected.
In addition to improving the living conditions for
thousands of families now staying in transitional shelters, Red Cross
has an important role to play in preparing some of the poorest rural
communities for future disasters - earthquakes, typhoons and floods
which claim thousands of lives, homes and livelihoods every year. |

While over $7m of the more than $9.5m donated by Australians has
provided for emergency response and ongoing longer-term recovery
programs, the remaining funds have been allocated primarily to support
a three-year community-based disaster-preparedness program
in Sichuan. Working in partnership with Chinese Red Cross at national
and local level, we will help build resilience within the most
disaster-affected communities.
The Power of Humanity begins with you
Through your donations to Red Cross, you have already assisted
so many people in times of need. But you still have the power to make
things better for many more, in so many different ways. We call it the
Power of Humanity.
By supporting our Humanitarian Network you can provide a phone
call to check the wellbeing of an elderly or isolated person living
alone, or help volunteers support fire-fighters and relief workers
during emergencies. You can even help provide clean water to villagers
in East Timor and Laos, with just one donation.
So please donate online again today to our Humanitarian Network and continue the good work that you have started.
Thank you again on behalf of all those you are helping.
