Artist's Statement
Around the World
As the child of diplomats, I was given the unique opportunity to see the world as I was growing up—I lived in nine countries, including Japan and the Ivory Coast, and on four continents, before settling in New York at age 18 for university. Throughout my childhood, I often found myself in situations where I did not share a language with my contemporaries. I continuously sought ways of spanning the communication divide, learning Japanese and French, before ultimately finding myself entranced with visual communication. I began to see photography as a way to give others a passport to my world. I continue to travel now on my own and find photography to be a memoir of these voyages and a powerful way to overcome language barriers.
