A primary criterion for admission to most college and university visual art programs is the assessment of the portfolio.  Students should include a variety of finished pieces in your portfolio that demonstrate your ability to work with a wide range of techniques, materials and subject matter.  Every university or college has different portfolio requirements so it is important to research each school before you apply.  Also, portfolio interviews usually occur in February or March, so students are recommended to prepare their portfolio as early as possible.

Tips for your portfolio interview:
> Generate interest and excitement for your work with the first piece.
> Order your work in the portfolio to show your development.
> Be aware that current work best demonstrates your skill level.
> Be prepared to explain why a particular work was selected for inclusion in your portfolio, what it means to you and what you were trying to achieve.
> Be prepared to talk about any research and preparation you did for your final work.
> Research the univeristy or college ahead of time to show your level of interest and commitment to studying there.
