Our Mission

  • A working project located at Spirit Lake, Iowa with the goal to produce Anhydrous Ammonia (NH3) from wind power.
  • To investigate the feasibility and economics of wind to NH3 production
  • To help create a new market for our areas bountiful wind resources.
  • To assist in the development of new and more efficient NH3 production methods.
  • To create an awareness about green NH3 and promote its use as carbon free fuel.
  • To help lessen our demand for carbon based fuels and decrease imports of foreign energies.
  • To support green technology that promotes the health of our planet

About us

Freedom Fertilizer

Freedom Fertilizer was founded by Steve Gruhn, owner /general manager of Courtyard Gardens a greenhouse and garden center in Spirit Lake, Iowa. He has been involved in agricultural his entire life. A lifelong resident of this windbelt state, Steve was inspired over 15 years ago by the Spirit Lake School System’s first wind turbine installation along with other developments in wind technology and how it can be used to develop renewable energies.

After exploring many forms of renewable energy and how the industries involved interact, he wanted to share the information with stakeholders – business leaders, farmers, local, state and federal officials and others – and started the Freedom Fertilizer blog.

The Blog

(windnh3.blogspot.com) has now grown into a web site filled with information – research and opinion papers, scientific studies, government regulations and more. At the same time, Freedom Fertilizer has become a leading voice in the advancement of the renewable energy industry.

 Freedom Fertilizer’s goals are to:

  • Produce renewable carbon free NH3 from wind power and other forms of renewable, sustainable and stranded energy, such as solar, hydro, geothermal and wave, while reducing the amount of carbon
  • Communicate its feasibility and economics
  • Create a new market for the Midwest’s bountiful wind resources
  • Lessen our demand for foreign energies
  • Promote greener technologies

The Team

We have put together an incredible team of experts in various fields. This team is working together to increase the awareness of how wind can produce a viable, safe, and green alternative fertilizer and fuel.
