The Bible or the Church
- 7/23/08 - THE subject of these pages is one of the highest interest, and it is only those who are in some way behind the scenes who can judge aright of its peculiar urgency at the present moment. "The greatest achievement in English history" is a distinguished historian’s estimate of the Reformation ; but in this flippant and shallow age we seem to be letting slip what the Reformers won for us. For a national lapse toward superstition upon the one hand, and rationalism upon the other, is one of the marked characteristics of the day.

The Gospel Preacher  - 9/5/2008 by
(Ben Franklin (not one of the founding fathers). "It may be safely affirmed, that no preacher among the Disciples is more generally known than the subject of this sketch. He has been so long connected with the Press, and has traveled so extensively, that wherever, among Christians, the Bible alone is the rule of faith and practice, there the name of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN is as familiar as household gods."

The Christian's Great Interest - William Guthrie 1828. Converted from CCEL. THERE are few subjects or exercises more deeply important to professing Christians, than that which forms the principal topic in the following admirable Treatise--the work of Self-examination. THE FOLLOWING FOUR BOOKS ARE DIFFERENT:

1. Bonnell's Dictionary of 3 Word Phrases (BD3WP.ssbook) - 5/19/2010 - is a dictionary of 3 word search phrases indexed on each word in the phrase.  These phrases were made by going through each word in the Bible (789,000+) and picking up the next two words to make a phrase. Then searching the Bible for that phrase and counting the occurrences, saving the phrase and its count in a list.  This generated approximately 386000 unique phrases. Only those occurring more than once are used.  This resulted in about 86,000 phrases categorized in a dictionary format.  Many of these phrases make interesting searches and give surprising results.  Click a phrase to perform the search.  For each keyword the verse reference of the first and last occurrence in the Bible is also given along with various search links.  Here's a snippet for Aaron with links shown underlined.
 Aaron:
1st occurrence is in Ex 4:14, last occurrence is in Heb 7:11
Search the KJV for AARON
Search the Topic Guide for AARON

THREE WORD PHRASES:
51 moses and aaron
29 aaron and his
26 sons of aaron
23 aaron the priest ...

Udated 8/26/2011 by merging with Webster's 1913 Dictionary definitions with help of Tim Morton.  Every Bible word has an entry in the dictionary.  Places and people do not have a Webster definition.

2. First Occurrence Commentary - 5/19/2010 - (1stC.sscmty) The law of first mention isn't really a law of Biblical Interpretation, but it often does give insight to the meaning of a word.  This commentary lists all the words in a verse that appear for the 1st time in the Bible.  When you hover the mouse over the Bible margin link for 1stC, it will pop up the list of the first words. Here's a snippet for Ge 6:2

First Occurrence Commentary, W.S Bonnell
Gen 6:2

3. Bonnell's Combined Word Book (BCWBinstaller.zip)- 3/22/2011 - Unzip the installer and run it. It will place the files in your SS User Directory.  BWCB is indexed by book of the Bible.  Each entry contains a "word cloud" for the top 100 keywords, a count of all the words occurring more than once, all three-word phrases occurring more than once, and the unique words and phrases in that book of the Bible.   Here's a snippet for Genesis:

All Mutiple-Occurring Words

Dr. Thomas Constable's Expository Notes - This module installer provides bookcase menu selector for the pdf note files for each book of the Bible.  It includes a set of correctly named EMPTY pdf files so everything works.  You will need to download the free pdf notes from his website (http://www.soniclight.com/constable/notes.htm) and put them in place of the empties which are stored in the folder - c:\TCEN-Assets

The Greatest English Classic - McAfee - The lectures included in this volume were prepared at the request of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, and were delivered in the early part of 1912, under its auspices. They were suggested by the tercentenary of the King James version of the Bible. The plan adopted led to a restatement of the history which prepared for the version, and of that which produced it. It was natural next to point out its principal characteristics as a piece of literature. Two lectures followed, noting its influence on literature and on history. The course closed with a statement and argument regarding the place of the Bible in the life of to-day.

Hope of Israel - Philip Mauro - 6/13/2008 - Written in 1922.  He is against Dispensational Theology and did not expect Israel to be back in the land.  He is clearly a Bible believer, but has a different interpretation. I wonder what he would say today?

Based on work by Martin Anstey, The Romance of Bible Chronology. (See below)

Satan by Lewis Sperry Chafer 11/21/10 - "This attempt to outline the Scripture teaching on this character will be undertaken under certain general conditions:

First-- The authority of the Scriptures of both the Old and the New Testaments will be accepted without question.

Second-- Evidence will be drawn from the Word of God alone, since no final light can be found on this subject other than it has pleased God to reveal in the Bible.

Third-- There will be no discussion as to the actual existence of Satan; this being both assumed and taught from Genesis to Revelation.

These pages are prepared especially for believers; knowing that this body of truth will be wholly unnoticed or rejected by the Satan-blinded world  (2co 4.4)."

Orthodox Daily Prayers (converted from CCEL)
by Johann Habermann (1516-1590)

This little manual of prayers herewith offered to English speaking Christians in their own language, has long been one of the treasures of the German people. ... [I]t was originally written by one of God’s noblemen, by one who “lived and moved and had his being” in the things of the Kingdom of God. Dr. John Habermann (known also as Avenarius, Latinized form of Habermann) died 1590 as superintendent at Zeitz, was a famous preacher and a distinguished scholar of his day. He was noted for his profound knowledge of oriental languages especially of the Hebrew. Still it is not this but the fact of his little prayer book that has endeared him to his fellow Christians. And this manual of prayers is the mature product of an inner life rich in the grace of God.

Chrysostom said: "All our troubles come from this one thing--not knowing the Scriptures!"

You may learn many facts about the Bible, but you will never know the Bible itself, until you begin where God began--at Genesis, master a book at a time and finish where God Finished--at Revelation!
