The Djembe
African origins-Universal appeal
Background:
The Djembe, although almost universally considered an African instrument, has made its impact on cultures all over the world. It is played in hundreds of nations across the globe, the United States not excluded.
Originally used in Africa for tribal drumming and ritual, it has become the poster child for African music. This is, of course, a misconception. African music is in fact multi-faceted, varied and complex- using a range of different instruments not including the Djembe.
That being said, as a drumming instructor, my opinion is that the Djembe certainly has the power to take you to Africa and back- if you have the interest. A POWERFUL musical instrument, I've found it almost impossible to achieve the same effect either musically or emotionally with any other kind; save my first love, the guitar.
If you have a love of rhythm, I strongly recommend the Djembe as a guide. There are some cheap books available that give you a pretty good handle on the basics. And of course, there are instructors out there who, hopefully, like me, enjoy the instrument so much that they have to share the love!
