CIVIL WAR NAVIES, 1855-1883, by Paul Silverstone
View
Quite literally, the last word on the subject of US Civil War ship construction and design printed in modern times. Mr. Silverstone's work is a standard of excellence, with either photographs or line drawings of each and every ship class, with plenty of technical detail. Still in print with the US Naval Instittute, the Commodore considers this a Must Read.  Jan 19, 2009 2:59 PM Hotspur O'Toole
Ironclads in Action By Herbert Wrigley Wilson
View
Amazingly decent historical work by Wilson, published in 1898. Available on Google books as PDF download. Probably the most authoritative source for the Battle of the Yalu (first Sino-Japanese War) that exists in English.  Jan 19, 2009 2:30 PM Hotspur O'Toole
Naval Architecture, Past and Present (Harper's Illustrated Monthly Magazine)

Apparently published in the February 1872 issue, this is an excellent survey of current nautical architecture, including a very detailed description of Ironclads.  Jan 19, 2009 2:42 PM Hotspur O'Toole

An excellent history work, perhaps one of the most definitive compendium of AARs from both sides that exists today. Public documents, available as a PDF from Google Docs.  Jan 19, 2009 2:45 PM Hotspur O'Toole
