Below are the committee updates, questions, and discussion items from the station committees. Please comment on questions or volunteer to meet some of our needs if you feel like you can. Contact the applicable committee chairpeople.Programming: (Committee Contact: Vania Gulston) - Committee decided WPEB will not allow cursing at any time. The decision will make it easier to train DJs and will respect all audiences of our community radio.
- Committee has approved a Jazz show, an International Hip-Hop Show, a New Philly artists Show, and a Francophone Music Show.
- DJ training classes will be taking place in the coming weeks.
- STREAMING: El has the technology set up, but streaming can't begin until we answer pending question about ads & bandwidth, secure the money (El has talked with a bunch of DJs and has received their promise of financial support for streaming fees), and triple-check our compliance with the FCC (Andalusia mentioned before that she would be willing to act like an FCC auditor to help us review what all we need to work on)
- Sam mentioned Prometheus has a powerpoint regarding the the logistics/legalities of streaming. Who will secure it?
- Prometheus set up GIST, a free streaming service, for Vania's school
- Joshua mentioned a program called "Reel Enterprise" he saw at the Muhlenburg radio station that's used for streaming, recording, and archiving.
- Q: Can we stream from a free streaming service if they have ads on their website? Can we support a sizeable number of listeners if we don't use that free service?
- Q: What are our programming needs/targets?
- More public affairs shows!
- Representation from Asian American communities
- Representation from lesbian/gay communities
- More latino programming
- Community reporting
- Classical music
- More carribbean programming
- Committee is developing a chair for News Programming-- Renee might be signing up
- Conversation about archiving:
- Should we be archiving shows? Yes--it's a way to record what songs are played when, exactly, and it's a neat way to document our station developing
- This needs to be an automated program, because we don't have the personpower to manually do it.
- Costs? Space? Organizing the storage? Milton volunteered to donate a terrabyte drive. Q: Can someone from programming hit arrange DJs to hit the "record" and "pause" button? Can we automate the process? Joshua mentions that "Reel Enterprise" might do that too.
- Talked about having a playlist of PSAs, Station Announcements, etc that DJs could either select and play from the DJ computer, or read from a file of index cards on the desk.
Outreach: (Committee Contact: Mbali Umoja) - Committee will reconvene soon--Mbali is on vacation. People interested in outreach should contact Mbali with their availability. Outreach meetings will probably be once every other week.
- People are asking/brainstorming how to make the outside of the studio look more like a radio station! Thoughts?
- Renee suggests that we need to develop a system for event planning that
allows us 2 months minimum for doing outreach and contacting the press.
Fundraising: (Committee Contact: Renee McBride-Williams) - MEETING next WEDS, July 15th, 6pm at the Station. Anyone interested in getting involved in the fundraising committee should attend. No prior experience necessary.
- First Committee Goal: to develop an accountability system for money raised, money spent, and money/budget desired (i.e. if we hold a fundraising drive, how do we know how much has been earned and to what it should be applied?)
- Shirley Randleman, from the 52nd St. Business Association, will come in next Wednesday to talk about fundraising ideas (donation matches, business outreach, etc)
- For all donations (monetary, equipment, in kind, etc), committee will start giving out receipts
- Jasper: We need to make it a Fundraising priority to clear up Fundraising mechanics between Scribe and WPEB (seconded)
- Emphasize Underwriting, too--We need to make it easy to do outreach to businesses.
Technology:
(Committee Contact: JJ Tiziou) - Update on antenna strategy and needs
- Jasper talking with school to get a group of engineering students out to the studio to help get things running well
- Due to Channel 6 going digital, we can expand our wattage without fear of overlapping the space they used to fill. We can apply to the FCC for more wattage; we could increase to 100 watts, but we have to fill out forms, etc.
- Tech Committee needs interested members! Contact JJ if you want to get involved--again, no prior experience necessary.
General Station Questions:- Need to start taking regular minutes in all of the committees
- Questions about the Board: what's the status?
- National Federation of Community Broadcasters -- Can the membership vote on joining for $200?
