Happy new year at WPEB!
Come to the meeting on Monday the 5th 6:30pm, WPEB Studios, 541B S. 52nd st. http://www.wpeb881fm.org
2009 is a big year for change, great things are coming at WPEB, but your help is needed!
We've got an amazing resource with huge potential for our community.
It's gotten off to a good start, but it's been a little bit rocky along the way. There's a lot of work to be done before WPEB becomes the thriving, smooth-running and sustainable station that we all want it to be. We've got the studio, we've got the transmitter, we've got some great shows on the air, and some great work being done by our committee members. More on that below.
It's also important to realize some of the challenges that we're facing, as we head into the new year.
We've got plenty of unscheduled times when the station's just playing the same old playlist when we should have DJs. We've got frustrated DJs that haven't been able to get shows because we haven't figured out how to securely give them access to the space. We've even got times when the station is completely off the air due to technical glitches. We've lost some people who were invested in the station early on, but became frustrated along the way. We've got other people and resources that could be really useful to the station, but we haven't been properly utilizing them.
Possibly the biggest challenge is simply figuring out what's going on with WPEB. Because we don't have a paid staff to coordinate things, there's been times when it's been nearly-impossible to even figure out who all the people in a given committee are, let alone what they're working on. This leads to a lot of confusion and redundant effort. We're working on ways to solve this problem by using technology (like getting everyone using this website!)
The first general meeting of the month is this Monday, 6:30-8pm at the studio. Please join us, especially if you are already a dues-paid member. Please also reach out to friends who would be interested in getting involved, or to people who used to be involved but may have drifted away. The new year is a good time to get all of these people together for a fresh start.
If you are an active member with dues-paid, please print out your ballot for the station charter and bring it with you. (If you aren't, why not become an official member?) We need to have enough votes on the charter in order to formalize the station governance and facilitate our growth. You can review the charter on the website by clicking here or print out a ballot by clicking here.
Here's some of the latest news:
Coordination:
- New tools to facilitate communication. Please visit the signup page to make sure that you're signed up on the WPEB announcement group, AND the appropriate message groups for the committees that you'd like to work with: Fundraising , Outreach , Programming and Technology) The calendar page has two separate calendars, one for shows, the other for meetings & events. Best of all, these tools can all be easily accessed and edited by any committee chair, so it's going to become a valuable resource as we start updating the site regularly and using the message groups to make sure everyone's getting the same information.
- New volunteers to help coordinate. Carl Ashton, Mahdi El and Greg Finnson have volunteered to give some time to help Mbali with coordinating the efforts of the different committee. We'll discuss how exactly this will work out at the meeting, but we appreciate having people willing to give their time to help us communicate amongst each other, so that we can in turn better serve our community!
Programming:
- We have approved 10 new shows for the new year!
- We are now in the process of scheduling the prospective d-jays for four 2-hour orientation sessions that will begin on Tuesday, January 20th.
- In an effort to get more news and public affairs shows in WPEB's programming line-up, we have given priority to applications for those types of shows.
- 5 of the new shows that have been approved are news/public affairs shows. We hope to coordinate with fundraising in order to target funding sources which are looking to support the development of new and public affairs programming at community radio stations.
- We are also beginning the process of creating a radio folio which will include bios of d-jays, program schedules, and program descriptions for all WPEB shows.
- If you'd like to help with programming, please join the Programming Committee Google Group
- Next meetings*: Thurs Jan 9, 16, 23 & 30 - 7pm at WPEB studio*
Fundraising:- Brian is trying to finish up sending out donation acknowledgement letters for 2008.
- There is a New Visions grant application due mid-February. Fundraising needs to work with the Programming committee to identify news programming, in the works, that could be eligible for the grant.
- Fundraising is working on getting 100% of the WPEB DJs to be paid members and will be contacting Members who have expired/lapsed.
- Seeking Program Underwriting funding, as usual.
- Attempting to meet once a month for outreach activities, flyering/talking to local businesses. The first of these activities took place in December with 300 flyers distributed to West Philly SEPTA commuters.
- If you'd like to help with fundraising, please join the Fundraising Committee Google Group
- Next meetings*: Wed Jan 7 & 21, 7pm at Kaffa Crossing (4423 Chestnut)*
Technology:- We're training people on how to use these new communication tools (website, message groups, calendars)
- New faster computer for for DJ web access, and are working on setting it up for show-recording.
- Automation is now running off of a separate computer. Please do not disrupt the automation computer. Just fade it out on the mixer when doing a show, and then fade it back in when you're done.
- We've installed a voltage regulator at the transmitter site, but that hasn't solved the problems. We've got a lead on another fix and are going to implement it soon. Hopefully once we resolve the exstreamer problems, the station won't cut out anymore, but for now it's still an ongoing issue.
- If you hear silence on the air for more than a few seconds, please contact JJ Tiziou or Louis Massiah, as we can now login remotely and reset the station and reset it remotely.
- We're planning on making some video tutorials on station operations. If you'd like to help film or edit these, please let us know.
- If you'd like to help with technology, please join the Technology Committee Google Group
- Next meetings*: TBD
Outreach: - You can download WPEB flyers to print in the documents section of the website. If you have access to a photocopier at your work, or know someone who does, please mass produce these and bring them to the station.
- Outreach committee needs some more active members, and to coordinate efforts more with Fundraising.
- If you'd like to help with outreach, please join the Outreach Committee Google Group
- Even if you're not active on the committee, you are all our outreach members. Please take a moment to reach out into your community and invite others to get involved with the station.
- Next meetings*: Wed Jan 7 & Wed Jan 21, 6:30pm at WPEB Studio*
Facilities:
- HEAT! The heat in the studio does actually work. However, due to our very limited budget, it is extremely important to make sure that the heat gets turned off when the studio is not in use. In addition to the thermostat in the bathroom, there is a switch on the furnace in the basement. PLEASE REMEMBER TO TURN THE HEAT OFF!
- ACCESS Issues: One of the main thing that has prevented us from adding more shows is that we haven't been able to coordinate access to the station. We need to be able to get a lot of people into the studio while making sure that our equipment is safe and well cared for. We're exploring a more sophisticated lock system. Another option is to have people commit to being part-time studio-sitters. If we can find enough people who can commit to a regular timeslot to mind the desk, then that could allow us to have more shows.
- Chairs. We could use some more folding chairs. If you have any that you can spare, please bring them to the meeting.
Governance:
- You need to vote on the charter if you are an official member with dues paid. (If you aren't, why aren't you? It's sliding scale, so everyone can afford a membership. The application is here ) - Current members should review the charter and fill out a ballot. Once the charter is officially approved, we can start moving forward with creating more official organizational structures for the station. It's an important step towards eventually becoming our own nonprofit.
