"Don't Quit
"When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When funds are low, and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit..."

baktun (properly b'ak'tun) is 20 katun cycles of the ancient Maya Long Count Calendar. It contains 144,000 days, equal to 394.26 tropical years. The Classic period of Maya civilization occurred during the 8th and 9th baktuns of the current calendrical cycle. The current (13th) baktun will end, or be completed, on 13.0.0.0.0 (December 21, 2012 using the GMT correlation). Tzolk'in (from the revised Guatemala Mayan languages Academy orthography, which is preferred by the linguists of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, formerly and commonly tzolkin) is the name bestowed by Mayanists on the 260-day Mesoamerican calendar used by the Maya civilization of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica...

...Anthony Aveni seerts, "Once a Maya genius may have recognized that somewhere deep within the calendar system lay the miraculous union, the magical crossing point of a host of time cycles: 9 moons, 13 times 20, a birth cycle, a planting cycle, a Venus cycle, a sun cycle, an eclipse cycle."

The more limited resolution is designed to address contention over the administration’s theory that Mr. Obama has the authority to continue the mission without Congressional authorization because the military activities do not amount to “hostilities” and so are not covered by the War Powers Resolution.

As Americans, we take for granted that the water we drink, swim in, and fish in is clean. In the not so recent past, this was not the case. Rivers were catching on fire and many rivers and lakes were dead. To a large extent, we owe our clean water to Congress passing the Clean Water Act in the 1970s. Now Congress is seeking to gut this vital piece of law. All of the waters of the United States need your help!

Congress will soon vote on a series of Dirty Water bills that will weaken EPA’s ability to ensure that your waters are clean. These “Dirty Water Bills” sacrifice public health by removing protections that safeguard our water. Congress will soon vote on 3 dirty water bills. They are:
HR 2018 (the so called Clean Water Cooperative Federalism Act of 2011) would reduce the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ability to make sure state rules for allowable pollution entering our waters are adequate to safeguard human health , as well as the health of local rivers and streams;
S 718 (Pesticide Clean Water Act Exemption) will eliminate Clean Water Act protections against pesticide pollution;
The Water & Energy Appropriations Spending bill 26-20, section 109, will kill recent guidance issued by the EPA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to clear up confusion about what wetlands and water bodies are covered by the Clean Water Act. This guidance is the first step in a process to restore protection for streams from pollution and wetlands from destruction.

For forty years, the Clean Water Act has been critical to protect our nation’s water and wetlands from pollution and destruction. If these bills are passed, Congress could turn back the clock and put the health of millions of Americans, as well as fish, and wildlife at risk.

The CPI is the formal education and outreach arm of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission, and its mission is to empower active and interested citizens to be more effective advocates in neighborhood and citywide planning issues.
The CPI course structure includes a prerequisite core course and three elective sessions. The core course consists of three sessions focusing on planning, land use, zoning and the development process. The Fall series includes three elective sessions - Commercial Corridor Development, Preserving a Sense of Place in Neighborhoods, and Greening Philadelphia & Greenworks on the Ground. Completion of the core course and two electives will earn participants a “Citizen Planner Certificate of Completion.”
Those interested in applying can find an application form on the CPI website....as per United Way newsletter...

Record amounts of rain have fallen in parts of Tennessee, and more was expected.

More than 9 inches of rain fell Monday in Chattanooga, and forecasters expected rain clouds to loom over the area through the next day. The rainfall beat an all-time mark for rain in 24 hours. Numerous roads were flooded, and even modest winds were pulling trees out of the soggy ground.

"We have had problems with trees coming down, mainly because the soil is so saturated with water," said National Weather Service forecaster David Gaffin in Morristown, Tenn.

In a move that could transform the company yet again, Google in 2011, entered into an agreement to acquire the mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility for about US$12.5 billion. Also in 2011, in one of the largest settlements ever, Google agreed to pay $500 million to settle a case involving the importation of illegal prescription drugs into the United States.

Over the last 13 years, Google has done an enormous amount to make the lives of many people easier and more productive. It's made a few missteps along the way, and it will undoubtedly make a few in the future. By and large, though, it appears to have tried to live up to its motto, "Do no evil." That's something most of Google's users hope the company will continue to do for the next 13 years of its existence.

In 1944, infamous attorney Raymond Pace Alexander defended housekeeper, Corrine Sykes of murdering Freda Wodlinger of North Philadelphia. Sykes denied her involvement with the robbery and murder of Wodlinger. However, Corrine was found guilty and sentenced to death. In 1946, Corrine Sykes became the first African American female to die by electrocution in PA. On his death bed, it had been claimed that Wodlinger's husband confessed murdering his wife. Yet, people remember the confession but, the paperwork disappeared. Note: During the 1940's, African American police officers were not allowed to interrogate White suspects or witnesses. Because of the racism in the Philadelphia criminal judicial system, Mr. Wodlinger could not be interrogated at the time of the murder. ...from the Public Eye News Journal [ http://flic.kr/p/4FR2dS ]

Thanks to the FBI for stinging this crazy nut...crazier than a coconut! al Jazeera/ENG wrote,

"...Ferdaus also told agents that he planned to attack the Pentagon in Washington using "small drone airplanes" filled with explosives and guided by GPS equipment.

He later added the US Capitol as target for that planned attack.

"In May and June 2011, Ferdaus delivered two thumb drives to the UCs [undercover agents], which contained detailed attack plans with step-by-step instructions as to how he planned to attack the Pentagon and Capitol," authorities said.

Ferdaus had travelled to Washington to conduct surveillance ahead of the planned attack, and had identified sites at East Potomac Park, near the Capitol, from which he planned to launch his explosive-filled remote-controlled aircraft.

Ferdaus was arrested immediately after he took possession of various weaponry from the FBI's undercover agents, including explosives, grenades and AK-47 assault rifles."

Pentagon launches war court website
By Carol Rosenberg | The Miami Herald

The Pentagon on Wednesday launched a new website Wednesday aimed at providing up-to-date information about military trials of suspected terrorists at Guantanamo, then used it to announce the first death penalty war crimes prosecution of the Obama administration.

Abd al Rahim al Nashiri, 46, a former Saudi millionaire, is accused of masterminding al Qaida's suicide bombing of a U.S. Navy warship in a Yemeni port a decade ago. His trial will be the first full military commission of the Obama era at a time when the White House is still committed to closing the prison camps. Wednesday, the Pentagon held 171 captives at its base in southeast Cuba, just four of them convicted war criminals.

Stevie Wonder's "Happy Birthday" track was written in 1981 by the pianist/social activist as part of the campaign to have the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. become a national holiday. The song's lyrics, above keyboard synthesizers, find Wonder questioning why anyone would oppose to commemorating King's legacy by setting aside a day for him. "I just never understood, how a man who died for good/could not have a day that would be set aside for his recognition," he sings. Preach, Stevie!

Lowe's Home Improvement
It appears that we managed to step into a hotly contested debate with strong views from virtually every angle and perspective – social, political and otherwise – and we’ve managed to make some people very unhappy. We are sincerely sorry. We have a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, across our workforce and our customers, and we’re proud of that longstanding commitment.

Lowe’s has received a significant amount of communication on this program, from every perspective possible. Individuals and groups have strong political and societal views on this topic, and this program became a lighting rod for many of those views. As a result we did pull our advertising on this program. We believe it is best to respectfully defer to communities, individuals and groups to discuss and consider such issues of importance.

We strongly support and respect the right of our customers, the community at large, and our employees to have different views. If we have made anyone question that commitment, we apologize.

Thank you for allowing us to further explain our position.

This Month in Music History:
WPEB-FM PHILADELPHIA COMMUNITY RADIO 88.1 FM
Music history, sometimes called historical musicology, is the highly diverse subfield of the broader discipline of musicology that studies the composition, performance, reception, and criticism of music over time....
Right - 'Walk on By' became Warwick's second international million-seller in April 1964

...The methods of music history include source studies (esp. manuscript studies), paleography, philology (especially textual criticism), style criticism, historiography (the choice of historical method), musical analysis, and iconography. The application of musical analysis to further these goals is often a part of music history, though pure analysis or the development of new tools of music analysis is more likely to be seen in the field of music theory. ... Some of the intellectual products of music historians include editions of musical works, biography of composers and other musicians, studies of the relationship between words and music, and the reflections upon the place of music in society. #fb #ap

The Salvador Dalí Museum is the permanent home of the world's most comprehensive collection of the renowned Spanish artist's work. Compiled by the A. Reynolds Morse and Eleanor Morse over a 45-year period, it is celebrated for its 96 oil paintings.

With oils spanning from 1917 through 1970, the collection provides an excellent overview of Dalí's major themes and symbols. Characterized by its diversity, it includes the Impressionist and Cubist styles of his early period, abstract work from his transition to Surrealism, the famous surrealist canvases for which he is best known, and examples of his preoccupation with religion and science during his classic period.

In addition to the 96 oil paintings, the collection includes over 100 watercolors and drawings, 1,300 graphics, photographs, sculptures and objects d'art, and an extensive archival library. Periodic rotations of the collection and special exhibitions allow museum goers to view new work on repeat visits.

Dalí's own museum - the Teatre-Museu Dalí; is located in Figueres, Spain. http://thedali.org/collection/collection_highlights.html
