Wound Magazine

“It is absurd to think that the only way to tell if a poem is lasting is to wait and see if it lasts. The right reader of a good poem can tell the moment it strikes him that he has taken an immortal wound, that he will never get over it.” (Robert Frost)

Wound Magazine exists at the intersection of cutting edge modern culture, where the music, fashion, architecture and art worlds collide.

Showcasing pioneers and leaders in their respective fields within a broad quarterly theme, WOUND targets the reader with a thirst for knowledge beyond the merely trendy; a thinker armed with a discerning appreciation of beauty and deep respect for artistic integrity.

Issue 1 of Wound Magazine hit the news stands and bookshops in early November 2007 and brought to the reading public a thought-provoking synthesis of interviews, articles, editorial and stunning artwork and photography.

Entitled Glitter & Doom, the 225-page magazine integrates music, fashion, art and architecture to afford the reader an exciting cultural synaesthesia rare in this medium. Articles range from the mainstream to the refreshingly obscure, and the overall effect is a well-balanced banquet, colourful variations on a theme, and a delicate fabric interweaving complementary strands.

The Music strand includes interviews with Uniform (Alice Kemp and Wajid Yaseen), The Sixteens (Kristen and Veuve), Cult with no name (Erik Stein and Jon Boux), Ulterior (Honey, Simmons, Ben, Karl), and Porl King (formerly of Rosetta Stone, now miserylab). Other articles range from Babygod, HTRK and U R Penetrators to the Appassionata sonata by Beethoven.

The fashion photography in Wound Magazine is a veritable feast, showcasing photographs by Peter Zownir, Frederic Aranda, Takashi Kamei, Ssam Sung Un Kim, Derrick Santini, Nari K, Mark Kean, George Bamford, Desmond Muckian, Lynn Wahab-Winter, Ognyan Yordanov and Don & Bronson. Fashion Director Laurent Dombrowicz writes about Thierry Mugler and Azzedine Alaia, and Francine Ihenacho's article about Kristian Aadnevik traces the development of his style.

The magazine also includes high quality artwork from an eclectic selection of modern artists. Thirteen works by Espira are accompanied by an interview with the artist, and Jennifer Martin's paintings are featured in a section entitled "Painted Ladies" which includes an explanation of her artistic style. The magazine also includes work by Karen Tang, Danny Sangra, Yutaka Inagawa, Kyu-Sung Jo, Sue de Beer, Børre Sæthre, and a fascinating article about Iranian art featuring work by Andisheh Avini, Shirin Aliabadi, Shadi Ghadirian, Farhad Moshiri, Shirin Neshat and Peyman Houshmandzadeh.

Add to this a film review (the controversial "What is it?" directed by Crispin Hellion Glover), articles on architecture, Picasso's Guitar, The Fountainhead, and the Church of San Carlino at the Four Fountains in Rome - and you get a flavour of the diversity and expanse of Wound Magazine's canvas. It's a magazine to buy, to read, to ponder, to enjoy - but definitely a magazine to keep, to treasure and to revisit - it's as much at home on your bookshelf as in the magazine rack.
