Arrest over theft of ancient artifacts in Sussex

posted 20 Jan 2010 05:50 by Worthing Archaeological Society

From the BBC News web site http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/sussex/8468924.stm:

A man has been arrested for the alleged theft of archaeological items from a site in Sussex.

Sussex Police seized items including medieval and roman coins, ivory and an 'anpulla', which pilgrims collected as souvenirs from their religious travels.

A 51-year-old man is being questioned about "nighthawking"; the taking of ancient monuments by unlawful searches.

Kent Police, who specialise in investigating heritage crime, are assisting the investigation.

Nighthawking often involves using metal detectors and the act is usually carried out at night.

The items are suspected to have been taken from the Chichester area, although the location of the site is being withheld.

Saturday 6th February - Society Open Meeting at Parham House + Visit to the WW2 Arcaheology on the Estate

posted 5 Jan 2010 05:30 by Worthing Archaeological Society

Meet at Parham House at 10.00 for a 10.30 start in the seed room, with a meeting for 2 hours to report back on last year and look forward to this year. We want to give the YOU the opportunity to discuss how you think things have gone over the last year, what your interpretation of the results is and for your feedback/guidance.

We will also have some information on the new research group being set up within the society.

The meeting to be followed by a walk around Parham looking at the WW2 features.

Again, please e-mail worthing.arch@gmail.com to indiciate numbers of attendees.

If you do not feel able to join us for the walk in the afternoon, or of WW2 archaeology does not "float your boat" then PLEASE, PLEASE do still come along to the meeting in the morning. This is really important to us, as without your support and feedback, we cannot grow as a society.
