Art can be an extraordinary experience. When we take the time to understand art, it usually presents itself as a thing of beauty and wonder. Our goal will be to take you on a wonderful journey of discovery. The forms and styles you'll hopefully discover are virtually endless; so just sit back and be patient. We think you'll be enriched by the experience.
You might wonder why there is a feeling of apprehension when visiting an art gallery and looking at a work of art. When you really think about it, it's not that you're worried about the experience, as much as how you feel you're supposed to react to them. And, if you're with friends, you might be worried about what to say so as not to look like a moron. You can rest easy! There are a number of ways to explore and find a few simple down-to-earth approaches that will allow you to experience art with a genuine feeling of appreciation.
Tip No. 1 Try and make it a habit to enjoy and appreciate art at every occasion.
You can do this by developing a habit of observing any art that crosses your path. Truth is, we often overlook interesting objects right in front of us. However, enough practice will help you to understand your own interests and inclinations.
Simply taking time to stop and appreciate any art form that crosses your path, will help you to develop a respect for diversity, and will also help you hone in on the styles and forms that you're most attracted to.
The next step is to move to the visual forms that attract you the most. In time, whenever you see art that you like, you’ll start to feel an emotion of being connected. For some, the appreciation will develop from seeing the lifelike representations of talented sculptors. For others, it will be the joy they experience in being able to tap into the emotions of the painter.
Tip No. 2 Keep Progressing
As you continue to hone your appreciation skills, you’ll readily begin to discover the media and artists that appeal to you the most. Style and colors can have a special meaning for each of us, and often, our appreciation can be traced back to our earlier years when significant impressions were made upon us. Just remember, the reasons for liking a certain style or art form can be endless. Don't limit yourself.
Tip No. 3 Keep refining your art sense
By exploring and creating your own art personality, you’ll end up being equipped with the styles and knowledge of the art forms that appeal to you. This allows you to become confident in your reactions, and gives you a great deal of freedom in being able to enjoy and purchase the artwork that makes your world more beautiful.
Tip No. 4 Keep a Journal of your discoveries
Keeping track of what you see, and how you react, can help you refine and enrich your own unique sense of art. This way, you’ll have a permanent log of your adventures in discovering art. Your journal can take any form you choose, and you can readily draw from you experience if you presently keep a journal on other things.
Tip No. 5 Keep an open mind
Always keep an open mind to new art appreciation experiences. It’s not hard to get trapped into a pattern of likes and dislikes. Initially, it’s good for your own creative process, but keeping an open mind allows you to progress continually. Remember, the objective of art appreciation is to understand and tap into your own love of art and artistry.
It helps to take the approach that, like any other form of communication, the artist is trying to say something, and he or she is making sense from some point of view. Art doesn't have to really be figured out to enjoy it, and quite often trying to over interpret a work of art will cause you to miss the point entirely. There are times when a piece will simply be eye-catching or mesmerizing, and will speak to you even if you don't really understand what it is saying. All too often, art appreciation is seen as an opiate for those who are weak and sentimental.
