Early Americas

An interpretive exercise on the Florentine Codex will be due Tuesday, 1/20 (half of a major grade).
We'll have a 20-minute quiz on Friday, January 23 (the other half of the major grade).

For Thursday, 1/22:
Write a dialogue* in which an Aztec and an Inca meet, in script form. Together, you should decide the gender of both of your people and name them (see below), as well as deciding whether the Inca is visiting the Aztec city or the other way around. You will each be responsible for half of the dialogue, so decide who is going to cover which themes.

Write 1.5 pages each and then we'll put them together in class tomorrow and perform a couple of them. Your grade (check/check-plus/check-minus) will be individual, though.

Pairs:

For Wednesday, 1/21:
Write a reaction of up to1 page about the inauguration. I'm going to give them to Ms. Perry; she will ask for your permission if she uses your words in any way. This isn't graded.
Some questions to get you started...
- How did you feel when you watched Obama's swearing-in?
- Why is it important that Obama is our first biracial president? Do you think this is the same as calling him our "first black president" -- a complicated question!
- Do you think Obama's presidency will be a major change? For the better or for the worse?
- What's the connection between Obama and MLK?
- Did any part of the inauguration surprise you?
- Did you like his speech? Did you like the music (Aretha Franklin, Yo-Yo Ma and quartet)? Why or why not?

For Tuesday, 1/20:
Finish the Florentine Codex analysis.
Read "The Inka," 178-181 in textbook -- I'll check your notes in class.

For Tuesday, 1/13: newly clarified
Read 171-176 in textbook (up to "The First Civilizations in South America"). For each section, take Main Idea - Supporting Evidence notes: Politics, Social Structures, Land of the Feathered Serpent, Art and Culture, The Destruction of Aztec Civilization.
This means come up with the MAIN IDEA of each individual section (not the main idea of the whole reading) and write bullet points (don't have to be sentences) about EVIDENCE for that main idea.

Example: Main idea for Politics: Aztecs had a king with absolute power who was supposed to be descended from the gods.
Evidence: - Selected by officials - Had a group of advisers but still had absolute power - etc...

Check/zero.

For Monday, 1/12:
Read 166-170 in textbook (up to "The Aztecs"). For each of the following sentences, either AGREE or DISAGREE and find 3 pieces of evidence to support your position from the textbook, not the video. (check/zero and we'll talk about it in class)
1. The Maya were a violent society. AGREE or DISAGREE?
2. The environment was the most important force in the rise and fall of the Maya. AGREE or DISAGREE?

For Friday, 1/9:
Read 163-166 in textbook (up to "The Maya"). Answer the following questions on a separate piece of paper, a couple sentences each. (check/zero).
- Where did the first Americans come from?
- Name 4 key features of Olmec civilization.
- How did the geography of the surrounding land influence Olmec civilization?
