Resolution Commemorating 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence

November 25 – December 10, 2008

BE IT KNOWN that the Commission on the Status of Women of the City and County of

San Francisco hereby issues, and authorizes the execution, by the subscribing Commissioners,

of the following commendation:

WHEREAS, The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign beginning on November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and ending December 10th, International Human Rights Day, symbolically declaring violence against women as a violation of human rights; and,

WHEREAS, The United Nations designated November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to remember the 1960 assassination of the Mirabal sisters, Dominican activists against the brutal Trujillo dictatorship; and, the International Human Rights Day theme for 2008 is “Dignity and Justice for All of Us,” reinforcing the vision of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a commitment to universal dignity and justice on this, the 60th Anniversary of its adoption by the United Nations; and,

WHEREAS, Mamacoatl, a member of the Women's Wisdom Work Collective, first commemorated the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women  in 2005 with a gathering a friends at the Mission and 24th Street BART station to show solidarity with the women of Latin America who were mobilizing to demand an end to gender violence on that day; and she, together with Nina Serrano, another member of the Collective, have worked tirelessly to organize community events to bring visibility to this issue;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED That the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women thanks the Women's Wisdom Work Collective for its leadership in bringing visibility to the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence this year, in past years, and into the future.
