The Womb

Letter from the Womb for expectant  Mothers and Fathers

A Message to an expectant Mother from soon-to-be-born Baby

There are some things I have been wanting to whisper to you Mummy, I am placing my beginnings in your hands.

And I do this knowing who you are and all the best that is in You
I know the contents of your heart for I have grown beneath it
Even now I am sensitive to your thoughts and feelings
I am counting the days as eagerly as you when I'll see your face
and you'll see mine.

When that time comes our journey as one becomes the journey of two
I ask you to be my first and most important guide, for your lessons are the ones my spirit will always remember

I will learn gentleness from your tender touch
I will learn joyfulness when my smile makes you laugh
I will learn peacefulness as you cradle me in your arms
I will learn mercy when you sooth my cry
I will learn caring whilst snuggled at your breast
I will learn patience as you allow me to develop in my own time
I will learn love from your lifelong commitment to me
And in return.....I will keep your sense of wonder alive
And I will inspire in you the unconditional love that rests in a mother's heart.

The best possible outcome for a child is that they will reach their first birthday with an inner sense of trust.        Trust in their caregivers quality of care and attention and trust that the home they live in is a safe place to grow from.

    Attachment, shared attention, brain
   development
, love.......and forward facing prams!

"Shared Attention" is when a parent/caregiver is totally available to notice and interpret the child's cues of need, be they discomfort, food, fluids,  sharing or the child's deep need to know their most important person in the world - Mum or Dad is there for them.

"Shared attention is the parent being available for shared  joys of discovery with the wee child or toddler.     Having their discoveries  acknowledged, providing them with language and sharing the delight of their discoveries lets young children know they are  valued, loved and safe!

Forward facing prams and pushchairs deny the rights of the child  to have a constant  visual and emotional relating with the person taking them out in the pram.

This constant absence of the parent or caregiver to the young child' s needs can lead to the child's inner feelings of isolation, disjointed relationship building, lost opportunity for developing intimacy with parents not to mention  language development moments being missed!

Young children do not need to see the world ahead of them ,they need to see their parents/ caregivers simultaneously to watching  and discovering  the world.

The child in the forward facing pushchair is faced with the busy moving world peopled with strangers as they are pushed about.      How much safer the wee one will  feel if he /she  could constantly see the parent's face and eyes, hear their voice, and know that while he/she is constantly seeing new things in the big world  the parent is absolutely there supporting  him on this  at times overwhelming experience!

BRAIN DEVELOPMENT studies prove that "shared attention" is crucial to the child's brain development  and it is these  repeated interactions between parent and child that form pathways in the brain leading to creating emotional stability through secure attachment and learning for the future .

Think about your own relationships and how you enjoy sharing new discoveries with friends
or partners and how unconnected you would feel if these people were always
behind you while you were out together!
