It was poetry that brought Jane to Wolvercote in 2007. Jane needed a hall large enough to exhibit her series of paintings inspired by the poetry of Wolvercote resident, poet and novelist, the late John Wain. So, Jane hired Wolvercote Village Hall to exhibit these and many of her other works.

So pleased was Jane on discovering Wolvercote’s wide open spaces and thriving community life that  she decided to move to the village, where she now lives with her daughter Emily and their dog Mandy (see cartoon). Jane followed up this exhibition in 2008 by an outdoor exhibition on Goose Green of the Wain paintings complete with full biographical details of his life and work for the first comprehensive literary programme for the Wolvercote Midsummer Festival.

Jane’s formal training was, she freely admits, limited to being sacked by an art college “for being too much of an individualist. Where, one might ask, can one be individualistic if not at Art College? Readers will have an opportunity to judge Jane’s style for themselves at an exhibition of her work next year at the Said Business School. In the meantime, when not painting, designing websites, or working as a volunteer you might see Jane walking or cycling to her allotment, or recovering from a marathon charity cycle ride. Or you can see Jane working at home recreating Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting of “Vincent’s Chair” on the wall of her entrance hall. Just download www.janeyates.co.uk for Emily’s video her mum at work and Jane’s galleries.
