Cox: the person in charge of steering the boat and telling the rowers what to do

Stroke side: left hand side of the boat if you are looking where you are going = people with the blade on their right hand side.

Bow side: right hand side of the boat if you are looking where you are going = people with the blade on their left hand side.

Stroke: the person sat closest to the cox.

Bow: the person sat furthest from the cox.

Riggers: the metal triangles on either side of the boat with gates to hold the blades.

A stroke: the whole motion of dropping the blade in the water, pulling it through and coming back to the initial position.

Catch: dropping the blade in the water.

Finish: taking the blade out of the water.

Recovery: part of the stroke when the blade is out of the water.

Drive: part of the stroke when the blade is in the water.

Front-stops: position of the rowers - legs bent, arms straight forwards, slightly leaning forwards = catch position.

Back-stops: position of the rowers - legs straight, arms bent, slightly leaning back = finish position.
