The overall aim of this project is to encourage and promote an urgent move to more sustainable lifestyles by the residents of Woking by living within the resources of the planet. ('One Planet Living')
The UK Government is now committed to an 80% reduction of carbon emissions by 2050. However there is a belief by a growing number of scientists that a 'tipping point' could be reached well before that date. Irreversible climate change effects may be initiated unless radical carbon reduction measures are put in place within the next 10 years. The need for action has never been more pressing.
This project therefore involves promoting the common sense and satisfaction of living a more considered, community orientated and creatively sustainable lifestyle. But equally importantly the project aims to give information and practical assistance to help residents make informed lifestyle decisions and lower their carbon footprints.
Current initiatives include:
- promotion of the use of the WWF Ecological Footprint Calculator
- a home energy meter loan scheme to help residents identify high energy consuming equipment and practices
- a free eco-auditing service for house-holders giving a report with prioritized actions to reduce carbon footprints
- provision of a databank of information to help people make sustainably informed purchasing choices
- tool and equipment sharing scheme (proposed)
