2. Save in your favourites with Google Sites as the name.
3. Go to Sign up for Sites
4. Enter email address and password.
5. Enter word verification. (The sound version for visual impairment is very difficult to understand and I don’t recommend trying it. Better to type wrong letters in and get given another chance.) (If you get the wrong letters put in, then it will just start the process all over again, so nothing dreadful happens)
6. Click I accept
7. You will then get a confirmation email from accounts-noreply@google.com, so look in your email, probably in junk mail. Click open message, or mark as safe, or whatever else you need to do to view a junk mail.
8. There will be a link there. Check it and click on it.
(People are often understandably concerned about clicking a web link in junk mail, so if you hover your mouse over the link and check in the grey bar immediately below the text window part of the screen, then you can see what the website is that you are being directed to. If it differs from what is in the visible link then you are being directed to a scam or phishing site. This shouldn’t be the case for this email, but is useful to know. If you are still concerned, instead of clicking on the link, you can copy and paste it into a new browser window.) You may also need to enable pop-ups if you directly click on the link, if your computer has been set up w2ith a high level of security.
9. A new window will open and you will be told your account is verified. There will be the opportunity to click here to manage your account profile. Click on this and you will
10. Go to a new window. Sign in on the RHS of the screen using the email address and password you originally supplied. Remember to tick remember me on this computer before you do so.
11. You are now registered with Google.
12. You need to let me know what email address you have used, so that I can invite you to become a contributor to the site.
13. When I have invited you, you will receive an email either in your junk, or possibly tagged as dangerous. The sender will be clare.palgrave@hotmail.co.uk, so you will know it is safe to open. Open the message, as before and you will go to Woking LA 21 Groups site home page.
14. Note that if you are not signed into Google then you will go to the site and see it just as a member of public does. There will be no editing facilities. So if you need to edit the site then you will need to be logged into Google. There is no harm in being permanently logged into Google.
15. So go to https://www.google.com/accounts/Login .
16. Sign in with email address and password and you will get a new page.
17. Click sites under ‘my products’ on the RHS.
18. You will go to a new page where you should see WokingLA 21 Group listed.
19. SAVE THIS PAGE in favourites with a suitable name like Woking LA 21 groups contributors. This is the page you will need to go to when you are editing.
20. Click on the WokingLA21 link and you will be taken to the WokingLA21 home page. This time you will notice that it has extra sections, which show you editing facilities.
21.If you go to this page: http://sites.google.com/site/wokingla21/Home/How-to-add-material-to-this-site, there is a tutorial I have written on how to do basic editing, set up new pages etc., also included in the next section below.
How to contribute to your pages
First of all a reminder. All contributors are asked to contain their contributions or modifications to their own area. Normally, this will be the project group pages for which they have been asked to assume responsibility by their group leader or the website administrator. If you notice errors in other pages, please forward details of them to the appropriate group leader, copying to clare.palgrave@hotmail.co.uk. The site administrator is advised of all amendments to the site, so can help out with tidying up if your basic information is added to the site. The important thing is to keep your pages up to date with information that will encourage more people to become involved with us. Niceties can be sorted out later.
1. Make sure you are logged in to your Google account and go to your Woking LA 21 groups contributors page saved in favourites. If not go to https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?continue=http%3A%2F%2Fsites.google.com%2F&continue2=http%3A%2F%2Fsites.google.com%2F&continue1=http%3A%2F%2Fsites.google.com%2F&service=jotspot&passive=true&ul=1 and log in using your log in details you used previously.
2. Click on WokingLA21 Groups.
3. Now you will be on the home page, with edit bars at the top.
4. Go to your project page you wish to edit. (There is a page set up for each project or community group ready for them to start editing.)
5. To edit this page click Edit page on the lower of the two top bars. You will now be presented with some editing bars just under the photo-collage of Woking.
6. The edit tools are very similar to those used in word processing. Start typing anything under the existing text just to get a feel. You can delete it using the backspace key, or the rotating arrow undo tool on the editing bar.
7. Now try out some more text modifying it using the bold, underline or italics tools.
8. Now to add a link. In a separate internet explorer window or tab, find a website that you have used recently. Copy the address from the address bar at the top. Paste it into the page where you want it. It comes complete with the link in it, ready for others to use. Now delete it by highlighting it and backspace, or using the undo button.
9. To add a significant amount of text to a page it is probably best to prepare the text in a separate document and then copy it in as follows.
10. Select the text you want to copy and copy it, (Control C).
11. Position your cursor on the webpage you are editing where you want the text inserted and then copy it in (Control V).
12. You may find that the text is a different size and colour to that already there. You can tidy this up by selecting the text and selecting Verdana from the drop down font menu and 10 pt from the font size drop down menu. (Verdana is the easiest font to read on screen) If you want to match the colour to the existing text then choose the A button and choose a colour close to it. You may want to differentiate from the existing text, in which case use a different, but readable colour.
13. There are also list options, with indent options, and various justification options as in normal word processing.
14. For those of you who are feeling really adventurous there are table options, subscript and superscript options, and one or two column layout. It is unlikely that you will need these to start with.
15. Play around with it. Remember that you can always undo any action with the undo key.
16. Now you can choose to save the work you have done using the save button OR if you feel you have made a complete mess of things and want to get back to the original page then just press the cancel button and confirm that you wish to discard unsaved changes.
17. Once you have pressed save or cancel you will see the page as viewers of the site will see it. Make a quick check to make sure it is as you intended.
18. You can carry on editing the page by pressing the edit page button on the top bars.
19. There are two ways to add more content after your main page: either as an attachment or as a new page.
20. To attach a document, make sure you are on the right page. In the blue bar at the bottom you will see Attachments. Click on it and a small box will open. Click on Browse to the right of the box and select the right file from your computer. Double click or click Open and the file will be uploaded to the site.
21. To make sure that viewers are aware of the attachment, insert some text in the page as follows: To find out more about xxxxx please see the attachment below.
22. If you have uploaded the wrong document, or want to modify it, simply click Remove and it will be deleted.
23. To create a new page click the create new page button on the top bars.
24. Give the page a title, make sure that the web page choice is selected, and at the bottom select Choose a different location. A window will pop up with a list of current pages on the site. Click your project group page. You will notice that the address under your page name will show that it is located 'under' the project group page. Now click create page.
25. You now have a new page attached to your project group page. And you can edit it in just the same way as before.
26. As the page is currently configured, it appears as a subpage to your group page, but does not appear on the sidebar. I suggest that you leave it like this for the time being as otherwise the sidebar will get very cluttered. If you feel it is necessary for it to go into the sidebar, please email the site administrator to arrange for this to happen.
27. If you decide you do not want this page after all, select More actions and then Delete and Delete again and the page will be removed.
