WM-Dict v2.0 --- Installation on Windows Mobile

This guide will step you through the process of installing WM-Dict v2.0 on your Pocket PC with Windows Mobile.

Note: This document assumes you have

a) filled out the WM-Dict Registration Form
b) received the Installer download links,
c) downloaded the Installer file (WM-Dict_WM_#.#.cab)
d) downloaded any language dictionary files you want to install. You can do that at the WM-Dict --- Download site.

Please note the following requirements to run this software:

  • WM2003 SE, WM5/6/6.1
  • Requires a touch screen device

Step 1: Install the WM-Dict Program

1) Copy the installer file named WM-Dict_WM_#.#.cab to your device.

2) On your device, run the WM-Dict_WM_#.#.cab file from File Explorer. The WM-Dict_WM_#.#.cab installer will ask you to choose if the program should be installed in the main memory of the device or on the storage card. We recommend you install it on your storage card, as the dictionary files you will install later are very large and will not fit in the main memory of most devices.

The Installer will copy the needed files to the following directory on your storage card:

• \Storage Card\Program Files\wmdict2\

The installer also creates a shortcut in the programs menu named WM-Dict 2. This can be used to launch the program.

However, at this point only the WM-Dict program has been installed and no dictionaries. You must next install one of the dictionaries for the program to be useful.

Step 2: Copy dictionary files to your device

As already stated, WM-Dict supports multiple languages. You can install just one of the language dictionaries or all of them if you like. To install a dictionary:

1) Unzip the dictionary file you want to use.

• For example, the ChsEnDict_######.zip file contains the Chinese-English dictionary files. After unzipping this file, there will be three (some dictionaries have only two) new files. These files contain the data for the Chinese-English dictionary and need to be copied to your device.

2) After unzipping the files, copy the unzipped files to the \Data sub-directory of the directory where you installed WM-Dict in Step 1 on your Windows Mobile device.

• If you chose to install to the storage card, the directory would be: \Storage Card\Program Files\wmdict2\Data\

Repeat this process to install other dictionary files.

• Note: If WM-Dict is running on your Windows Mobile device when you copy a language dictionary to your device, you will need to stop and restart WM-Dict.

Step 3 (Optional): Install Chinese Font

If you plan to use one of the Chinese dictionaries with WM-Dict there are additional requirements. You can move to Step 4 if you do not need Chinese dictionary support.

Most Windows Mobile devices do not include information that will permit the display of Chinese characters. To resolve this issue, you must install a Chinese font on your device and it must be properly configured so that it is recognized by the Windows Mobile operating system.

To help you in this regard, at the WM-Dict --- Download site we are providing the ChineseFont.cab file. This file contains the necessary font files and registry settings for Window Mobile.

1) Copy the ChineseFont.cab file to your device

2) From File Explorer, run the installation process for ChineseFont.cab

• Note: This installs the Chinese Font to you the \windows directory on your Windows Mobile Device and requires about 3 Megabytes of storage space.

3) After ChineseFont.cab has completed its installation, perform a soft reset of your device (Turn it off and then back on)

• Note: Please understand that Chinese characters are not officially supported by Microsoft on non-chinese Windows Mobile Devices. We have tested the ChineseFont.cab installer on numerous devices with success. However, there is no guarantee it will work on your device.

Step 4: System Requirements

A Windows Mobile PDA with the .NET Compact Framework 2.0 installed is required to use WM-Dict. If you do not have the .NET Compact Framework installed, you can download it for free from Microsoft:
• here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e3821449-3c6b-42f1-9fd9-0041345b3385&displaylang=en
• or at the WM-Dict --- Download site.

Note: The .NET Compact framework may take 2 to 3 Megabytes of storage space in your main memory.

Note: The application has been tested with Windows Mobile 5 and 6. Also, some users are using Windows Mobile 2003 Second edition and have reported no problems.
