There will be a variety of sectionals, some homeschool-specific, some theological, some for kids and teens, and some that will be of interest to everyone. Check back. SECTIONALS The Church as the Household and Family of God Pastor Rick Stuckwisch and his wife LaRena will be discussing the ways in which the life of a family parallels, informs and intersects with the life of the Church as a family of God in Christ. Heidelberg for the Homeschool Pastor Erich Fickel will briefly place the Heidelberg Theses in context of the Reformation and illustrate their importance in teaching the inability of good works to produce righteousness and man's lack of free will in spiritual matters. Finally,he will distribute the theses edited for children to assist parents in teaching the them to their children. Writing for students Nancy Osbun will be teaching a two-part writing clinic for middle school and older students. (More details to come.) Unschooling Unschooling has been a hot topic during the past year. Jane Casey will lead a discussion about what unschooling means and what it looks like in a Lutheran family where we recognize the reality of original sin. We'll also discuss how it works on a practical basis and about how to document it for college admissions. Teaching Writing Nancy Osbun will offer direction for teaching writing to your middle school and older children. Hymns in the Life of a Lutheran Mom How hymns comfort a wife and mother as she faces the challenges of being a sinner living with sinners. Teaching your kids hymns and singing with them. Taught by self-professed hymn addict Susan Gehlbach Marriage & Courting Pastor William Foy will lead a discussion for teens and parents alike on "early" marriage, courtship, and sex. This is sure be a lively and interesting sectional. Praying with Martin Luther Pastor Jeff Horn The Catechism: the Heart of the Reformation Dr. John Nordling Acolyte Clinic Members of the Redeemer acolyte corps, led by Patrick Casey, will hold a session to train those young men who would like to acolyte during the retreat services. What is a Deaconess? Deaconess Lynnette Fredericksen will teach this session especially intended for teen girls Pericope Studies To assist those pastors who have given up part of their week to be with us, Pastor Rick Stuckwisch will do a pericope study for the upcoming Sunday in the Three Year lectionary. Pastor David Petersen will do the same for the One Year. PRESENTERS Jane Casey has been homeschooling her four children since 1996, providing an answer to the question, "What can you do with a degree in history?" Her two oldest are now graduates of the Casey Academy. Bethany, 23, is a college grad with highest distinction and works as a paralegal. Patrick, 20, is a college sophomore and made the Dean's List his freshman year. Jonathan, 17, and Andrew, 14, are still being homeschooled. Jane and her husband of 24 years--and high school sweetheart--Colin, moved to Fort Wayne in 2002 and are members of Redeemer Lutheran Church. Jane is the founder of the Indiana Home Educator's Network and founded and moderates the IndianaHomeschoolers email list with over 1400 members. She teaches classes in the Redeemer Homeschool Resource Center and has been a presenter at homeschool conferences. Reverend William Foy is a former Marine officer now Lutheran Pastor. Married to Diana, father of William, Christina and Stephan. He has traveled much of the world and worked in Mexico. He is a pastor, husband of home school teacher, hobby chicken farmer and gardener. Dcs. Lynnette Fredericksen is currently serving at St. John Lutheran Church and School in Suring, WI, as school principal and teacher of grades 5-8. She is a registered nurse and previously was headmaster and teacher at Christ Lutheran Academy, Kenosha, WI, and a high school teacher in Racine, WI. Her education certificate is from Concordia University-Wisconsin and her Masters Degree is from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne. She previously served on the Board of Directors for Higher Things for nine years and is newly elected to the Board of Regents for Concordia University-Wisconsin. Susan Gehlbach is a mom of six and has been homeschooling since 1987. Four have been graduated; two high-schoolers remain at home. She has presented a variety of workshops at the Wisconsin Parents Association annual conferences and spent over a decade on the WPA board. She and her husband Gary moved to Wisconsin in 1987 and currently live in Sussex. She is a hymn addict and has no intention of joining a recovery program.Dr. John G. Nordling is an Associate Professor of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Theological Seminary. Mrs. Nancy Osbun is a graduate of Concordia Teachers College, Seward, NB and taught for 39 years in the Lutheran school system. For 30 of those years she taught literature in grades 6-8 and has written curricula in upper grade short story, novel, and poetry units. She also wrote for the Concordia Publishing House Curriculum Guide. She has also been involved in music and drama during her years as a teacher. During the past year she has been working with homeschoolers, teaching writing and literature at the Redeemer Homeschool Resource Center and she and her husband Milo are members of Redeemer Lutheran Church. Patrick Casey is 20 and has been acolyting at Redeemer for almost eight years and has received training, mentoring, and advice from Rev. Dr. Doug Judisch,+ Rev. Dr. Kurt Marquart+, Rev. Prof. Robert Roethemeyer, Arch-acolyte Winston Grieser, and--of course--Rev. David Petersen. |
